    Hello everybody!

I am actually studying to become a midwife in the midwife school of Clermont-Ferrand, France.
This is my fourth out of five years of studying, and it’s in this context that I’m looking for an internship in a birth center in London for next year.

I have the chance to be able to choose whatever ground I want for this internship, that’s the reason why I would really like to come to a birth center. Indeed, that kind of place doesn’t exist in France and I’d truly enjoy to discover United Kingdom’s practice in that matter :D
More precisely, I’d be glad to know more about special practices as birthing pools, upright and all-fours position…
Another motivation for me is to improve my english and to learn english medical vocabulary as well.

Can someone help me to contact a birth center?
Do you think it is possible for me to have an internship in London?
Do you have internship in birth centers?
I have no answer for email I have sent, I despair...

Sorry lovely, I didn't see the reply.

In the UK the universities decided who goes where. For example my university has 8 placement hospitals so the uni select a few students for each and that is where we go.

Then in our 3rd year ( we do a 3 year full time degree) you may do an elective if you have got all the deliveries you need to qualify. During this elective You can either go abroad or go to another hospital in the uk, which is particularly helpful if you don't intend to work where you trained.

I think you will need to contact the unit's direct. I would google maternity care in london and see which units you can find... all i know of is :- Guys & St Thomas

Then look on their websites for the practice development team contact details or the like and then e-mail/ call them asking for an elective placement.

Hope that helps a bit, but as I said, I haven't really looked into Elective stuff as i decided against doing one myself. xx

Does it need to be in London? It is quite expensive to live there and I imagine that perhaps there might be more chance if you can look elsewhere as well. I'm afraid I can't give you any more useful advice as I'm not even a student myself yet but if you can widen your search a little there are some great units all over the country.

Is there no lecturers at your university with links to the UK? You have to be CRB checked etc to work here, so not sure how it would all work?

Hi Lula! I hope you find what you are looking for, sorry I am not in a position to offer much practical help but I'm sure Curly will help you out!

It sounds very different in France from what we have here. Perhaps you can tell us more about your system and we can tell you more about ours? You say five years of study - is that all midwifery training, or did you have to do a pre-course? It sounds very long! From your comments about birth pools etc I am guessing that almost all births in France are in hospital? Very interesting to hear how differently it all goes in different countries.
