    Hi everyone.

I was accepted onto a course to study midwifery for Sept 2011, I found out I was pregnant in June 2011 so I have deferred my entry to Sept 2012.

What I really want to know is what are the realities of studying midwifery.. for example, what are the typical patterns of placement? And a day at University for lectures? Basically what is the typical schedule like? I live near the University i'll be attending. I'd like to know how much time I will be spending away from home. How much time do you spend in independent study, in the library for example.

Childcare is not a problem as my partner is self employed and chooses his working hours, and my mother is willing to provide childcare whenever necessary.

    Thanks :)

Thanks :) Are you usually in lectures the whole time or do you get a few hours in between?

Our typical uni days are 9.15-16.15 (sometimes finishing earlier) this is generally 4 days a week as we tend to have a weds off as independent study, we don't get any spare hours during the day usually in lectures all day apart from short morning break and lunchbreak. On placement we are expected to work 37.5 hours a week so generally 5 shifts unless your mentor works long days and then it's less days

monday is a pretty full on day.We just break for lunch.

Tuesday we have a 2 1/2 gap between lessons so that allows us to catch up with work, or have time gossiping!

wends and thursday we just had the one lesson! we have a 15min breal on wends. No break on thursday

we have blocks either uni or placement, uni days are 930 til 430 and every week day except wednesday when its 9.30-1230 and on placement the week is 37.5 hours any time of day or night. in regards to independent study i cant comment as we havent had any assignments or anything yet to revise for, however we are advised to read for 10 hrs a week..

Hey Student Rachel, im a 2nd year student midwife at northumbria university. We dont have a set timetable so can be everyday of the week. We pretty much start at 9 am or 9.30 most days and can be in until 5 if its a busy day. If you plan to be their 9-5 then anything less is a bonus. In my 2nd year ive been in uni mostly 9-3 although in 1st year we were there until 3/4/ or 5pm. I'll paste a link of the 3 year timetable example to give you an idea on theory and placement slots for september intakes although this is only an example. I hope this has helped. Any more questions ask her or pm me xxx
