I think I really do want this! But worried about telling people.

    Hi :)

I know you've had tons of replies and you're probably a lot less worried now but I know exactly how you (and the rest of you) feel! I'm in my second year of a languages degree and always thought I would be a teacher, but I hate my course and did not enjoy the little teaching experience I had! I was scared to tell my parents too, because like a lot of you I thought they would just think it was another phase I was going through. But when I finally told them I wanted to do something different my mum said, "you want to be a midwife don't you?" No idea how she knew but she said she just had a feeling about it! The response from everyone else I've told is mostly that it's such a big change from foreign languages but nothing negative! So long story short be brave and everyone will get behind you! Good luck on your midwifery journey :D

Im in the same position school wise, I originally did a program in pastry chefing, and then an entrepeneurship program, have been in a bunch of different jobs in different fields. I told my parents and they have been super supportive, but I also have a family with 4 homebirths and 9 natural births.

Good luck and follow your heart!

My sister was in a similar position. She was often changing her mind about her career choice but she has now settled well into Uni and is a fab Student Nurse. She always says 'this is the best thing i have ever done'. She was born to be a Nurse and all her family and friends are behind her every step of the way. x

I don't think anyone does the same job all their lives! My dad is semi-retired now but he's spent the last twenty years in computing, which didn't even EXIST when he was 18! So don't worry about changing your mind. There's no such thing as a job for life any more - which means you don't have to stick to a job for life any more.

Also on the money thing, as long as you are staying afloat financially and you aren't getting into masses of credit card debt or anything, who cares that you are not earning? You are making an investment into your future and that is worthwhile.

Thanks for all the extra replies, I have been mad busy in work but check the forums as often as I can, infact I have spent most of today browsing the forums instead of doing my school work! eek

Today is one of those days when I am regretting not applying for 2012 entry because this week in work has been dreadful and so stressful. But it is too late to change that now.

It's nice to hear others have taken their time to realise that they do want to do midwifery.

I'm the same as you, I've dotted about deciding what I want to do with my life, and I'm going to be 30 this year!!

I did a degree in Physiology, no great career path there, just a subject I enjoyed.
I've worked in a hospital, started a nursing course (When I was 23) left because OH had the chance of a better paid job and I wasnt in the right place at that time to do the course...not confident enough at all. I always, however, had an edging towards looking into midwifery but left it at that time....

Now I'm here, 6/7 years on and midwifery is still eating at me, I have 2 young children, and we're deciding on one more and then I can bite the bullet and apply.

For me its the right choice, its a career with the potential to climb up the ladder, I'm so so passionate about pregnancy, the pregnant woman and labour (and love babies of course!)

OH is completely behind me on my decision, he knows how much this subject engages me... and think it would be a good career choice for me.

I wish you all the best, I have to bide my time for a couple of years yet, but think we have agreed I can look to apply for 2014/2015 intake!
