This article has been brought to my attention.

    http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/s...-on-internet-networking-sites-78057-20598681/

It is situations like the one in the article above that led to us having such strict rules on conduct. Predominantly because its miserable to frequent a community that is negative, 'slags' people off and is generally unkind - we never wanted to create a monster like that and Im delighted to say that SMNET is a positive, thriving and homely place to be. But this article shows that it is damaging to ones career, as I had always suspected, to behave in such a manner on a public forum.

From my previous career I know that certain communications are admissable evidence in court, including emails and texts and now its seems what one contributes to a forum is also admissable - well at least in a disciplinary setting regarding conduct. The NMC conduct guidelines remind us to be mindful of our conduct away from work and this seems all the more pertinent now.

But how would we know whose behind the mask of the user name? surely people can behave as they like as its not facebook where you have to put your real name?!

    Simple.

The technology behind SMNET and MidwiferyWorld is immense for example we can locate precisley where members log on from, so with an email address - our system does not support fake ones, and a precise location - we can quite easily identify people. On location alone its pretty easy aswell, given tht the midwifery community is quite small and someone always knows someone based at X. Also we have an infractions system where people can be banned if their conduct is not in line with the site rules of conduct, meaning that their IP address is banned and they cannot create a duplicate account as we have an AE detector that flags it up and prevents it, should they try again.

So feel safe in the knowledge that should you ever encounter a troll (a trouble maker) here we can and will take swift action on those who attempt to disrupt the learning and enjoyment of others.

However, I have not yet come across any trolls here as everyone is just totally lovely and respectful of oneanother, the staff, Rob and I and we are all appreciative of the time and effort that each one of you puts in to make this place the safe learning haven that it is.

But please be vigilent, if you come across anything you are not happy with - people not playing nicely, inappropriate comments, goading etc - then please contact a member of staff and we will sort it.

Just want to say I was a victim of a troll on a wedding website, where I went to view a wedding dress, and someone this TROLL bad mouthed me on the site and the woman didn't even turn up to pick me up from the train station as promised I was left stranded with my friend for nearly 2 hours waiting for a return train and out of pocket. Most importantly without a dress!

So having the implications in place are reassuring

    thanks

I used to use a pregnancy/parenting forum when I was pregnant with my lo and a few "Trolls" popped up on there now and again causing havoc and upset. Although I was never a victim of it personally, as I am the sort of person who avoids conflict and arguments wherever possible lol, I couldn't believe some of the b!tching, sniping and even bullying that went on there (mostly from a minority of people it has to be said) and all this from women who were supposed to be supporting each other through pregnancy and later, life with a new baby. I don't use that particular forum anymore as it became very 'cliquey' and I got fed up.

I'm very happy to say SMNET couldn't be more different and is always welcoming, supportive and friendly. Members here can expect a friendly, cheerful welcome whether they come on every day or once a week.

Just wanted to say keep up the good work everyone!

Thanks for your comments. It amazes me that it goes on at all. My 10 year old niece is getting bullied via Facebook - whatever next! Its so pointless I have no idea why people want to make trouble for people who are gathered together to learn, or share or just enjoy an online life. Its for saddo's if you ask me and theres no way Id have that nonsense here!

Its great that this site has things in place to try and prevent trolls visiting this site. The bereavement forum I use has had quite a few in the almost two years I have been there, unfortunately becoming more frequent.

TP that is so sad about your niece, internet bullying is huge isnt it? On the new msn (instant messaging service) I think they are trying to address this as there was always a choice to block and now there is a choice to block and report, so thats good IMO.

i used to go on a parenting forum all the time and one user actually posted all the time -was really nice etc, chatted in pregnancy and early labour, and also had photos of 'her' baby on after the birth........then she told us all she had been diagnosed with a brain tumour and had only months to live -well some people were genuinely devastated as they had become her 'friend'......but then one of the mods got suspicious and it turned out she was a complete troll who had stolen someone else's photos and used them as her own, and she was in fact 16 or something. (this went on over the course of about 6-8 months!)

there are some scary people out there!!

and TP -hope your niece is ok xxx

That's interesting Roo, I wonder if it's the same one I came across on a site about 18 months or so ago claiming to be a young expectant mum with no money etc etc, lots of us fell hook, line and sinker and sent baby clothes and gifts, turned out it was all fantasy and she had a facebook account claiming she'd already had the baby prematurely, also with stolen photos. So weird, she (if it was a she) even sent out lovely little thank you cards!

I used to run a parenting site, we was also trolled with a lovely young lady who seemed normal etc etc knew all her facts about pregnancy and labour etc etc we befriended her and cood over her photos and storys and stuff, till one day she came on and told us her baby had died of cot death (that day). we was all deverstated, send cards and flowers etc .......... to cut a long story short, she had stole photos off another site. it killed my site, nobody knew who to trust anymore and everyone started accusing everyone of everything..... i pulled the plug.

Sounds very much like the one I was talking about. Did she go by the name of Becky by any chance?
