Is it correct that students aren't placed on labour ward for 1st placement?

I started wlv in oct2010 people were placed on del ward then!

Not so sure about how they are planning placements with the new curriculum but ill find out when i return in sep12 :)

tbh i personally think its a good idea, much better to start on community or on antinatal ward.

At my trust we don't go on labour ward till year 2 as we are meant to focus on normal because abnormal or something like that?

ETA we do have a 9 week placement on birth centre though x

im in my 1st year at wlvs and first placement was community but been on delivery ward for last 4 weeks. i think they break you in slowly and let you learn the basics and gain a bit of confidence, i dont think its because of the sb or anything, stmw on the ward have witnessed sb and iud, its part of midwifery, they cant really shield you from itx

No that's not true at all. Students can be and have been placed on delivery suite for their first placement at Wolves.

Yes that is correct, your first year in training "should" be generally low risk. Depending on the trust you will go to depends if you put in delivery suite or not. The trust i am not we have been put into birth centres but sometimes you end up caring for your ladies in delivery suite when theyve been transferred anyway.

Depends on the university and on how many students they have versus how many students they can place in any given clinical area at a time.

I think labour ward can be daunting & for a first placement a little unnerving. I didn't have my LW placement until 11 months in....in that time I had looked after women, learnt the basics, built communication shills with women & their families so by the time LW placement came I was more than ready for it. I think I gained so much more from this 'prelude' then some of my colleagues who had LW as their first placement. Perhaps in part due to the fact that we were only the second lot of direct entry midwives & hadn't done nursing previously. So we didn't know the basics, we only had a couple of clinical kills sessions. But, essentially, we all want to get our first catch.....and many more thereafter!!!....lol
