    Hello all :)

I would have made this a group but I don't think I can at the moment until the site changes are made.

It doesnt matter if you're holding an offer or not yet but I thought it would be a nice idea to have a thread that is aimed at the trials and tribulations of being of a "certain" age. People of all ages of course doubt themselves from time to time but it's always nice to have somewhere to come where you know there will be understanding.

The worries of mature students are different compared to the worries of much younger people and having a peer group is always lovely whatever the age.

Ive lost count of the times I've read.."Am I too old to...." or "I'm 39 is it too late....."

Mods if this is in the wrong forum please don't hesitate to move or even make into a group if it can be done?

Anyway I'll start by telling you a little about me.......

I'm 46 have 3 kids 23, 16 and 9. I've been married for 17 years now and finally have an offer starting in Feb next year. Had to do access to qualify whilst at the same time running my travel business and it caused many tears and tantrums :p but I got there!

Am I worried about the degree? you bet I am am. I couldnt get into my local uni for the last 2 years so have taken a place in Reading and will have to live away from the family and visit frequently whenever I have more than 2 days off at a time. I will miss them unbearably but I also find the thought of my midwifery dream of 15 years slipping away unbearable too so I'm grabbing the opportunity while it's there.

On top of this I have pre-menopause on it's way..apparently..yippidee doo daah :( I've had to start walking everyday to prepare for placement as I'm so damned unfit ....oh yes and my libido seems to have gone on holiday (not that, that will matter much since i'll be away :D)

If anyone has done the leaving the family thing before and it's worked let me know. If you've done it and it hasn't worked.....shushh!! :)

fabulous idea for a thread - i know there are lots of older ladies about - but education-wise, 'mature' means anyone over 21, so perhaps state the age range this thread is aimed at? if there is one i mean :) Xx

Hello fellow wrinkly ! ;-) I'm 38 next month & this is my second year applying. I can only apply to one uni as I too have a family. I've been married for 17 years as well and have 3 boys 14, 10 & 7. Well done on getting your place x

You got your first member - what a great idea, as you said I know all student midwives have there trials and tribulations but assuming those who are in the 'mature' group will have varying difficulties throughout the three years. I know I'm already envisioning a few hurdles.

Anyway here goes about me; I'm 43 years old and busy sorting out bursary and loan application for starting UCLan on 12th Sept. This was my third year of applying and I got my phonecall a few weeks ago offering me a place from reserve list.

I remarried last year, my partner and I have been together for almost 6 years. I have three teenage daughters from my previous marriage, two living at home aged 13 and 15 and the eldest who is 19 lives with her boyfriend and their 19 month old daughter, who is the apple of her nana's eye!
As for menopause - I've got through that and come through the other side, was all over for me by the time I was 40 so no more hot flushes and night sweats, just an ever failing memory!!! Libido - whats that? Mine got up and left, now by the time I crawl into bed all I want to do is sleep!!!

I am both excited and nervous at the start of entering uni, part of me wishes I'd done it many years ago but I also know that the time wasn't right then.

    Hello Mrs Flowers :)

I spent two years thinking I can only apply to one uni but after my second refusal from my local and then being told there was nothing wrong with my application it was just due to numbers I decided I had to think outside the box as I'm on a time limit so to speak.

I'll be staying with my Aunt and Uncle as their children have flown the nest and they have a spare room to let to me (at family rates!) that gave me access to about three reachable uni's but luckily I got the offer before having to go through it all again in September :)

One of my children is leaving school in May 2012 and the other is settled in his primary so I think it'll all be ok....I hope so anyway xxxx

    Welcome Niteowl :)

Lovely to see you in here....have you come down off the ceiling since hearing about your place yet?

Wow! all over by 40 that was quick. Part of me is sad that my lady machinery is retiring but also part of me will be glad when I don't have all the monthly stuff to worry about.

Know what you mean about falling into bed too.....I can just see us on nights...curled up in the day room having a snooze...NOT!!!

Yes I've come down off the ceiling, just mixed up with form filling etc at the moment.
I had a hysterectomy at 32 but was left with an ovary - at 38 started going through symptoms of menopause and blood test confirmed it. My mum and her sister and mum all had early menopause so was expecting it really. xxx

Ah yes it does seem to run in families doesn't it.

I was so pleased for you when you got your place. I can't wait for all the form stuff and the pre-enrollment. Feb seems to be taking forever but then at the same time I know it will go fast if you seem what I mean?

I can't wait to go but I'm dreading saying goodbye!

Hi, I'm 41 years young with 3 children 18, 16 and 9. This was my second year of applying as last year didn't have enough qualifications. Done access course this year and then got my conditional offer in February. Feeling really lucky as got my first choice uni which is only about 30 mins away and placement even less and my offer went unconditional this week. So no trials or tribulations so far.
