Well today I was lucky enough to have my first catch and I'm soooo elated.
I've been caring for the lady antenatally since I started my placements. She came into the stand alone birth unit for assessment this morning-contracting 1 in 4. My mentor did VE with consent and cervix was fully effaced and 8cm dilated. I did baseline obs of mum and checked FH. Mum was mobilising well and using entonox for pain relief. Contractions built over the next couple of hours in length and intensity. FH was auscultated intermittently and was great throughout.
As she moved into second stage I came to sit beside my mentor to observe and then she passed me some sterile gloves and talked me through how to deliver the head and body. The mum was fantastic and she managed throughout with entonox and a hot pack on her back. Healthy baby was delivered by me ! Cord clamped by me and cut by dad. Baby was passed to mum for skin to skin and then I used CCT to deliver placenta. Didn't realise quite how firmly you need to pull! But am learning all the time.
Blood loss was minimal and my mentor did x3 sutures, whilst I observed.
Mum and baby checked and all good- we then check placenta- all as it should be.
Baby then weighed, measured and dressed and cups of tea all round. Mum has a bath and changes, obs all fine and two hours later they leave to go home.
What an amazing day- I love being a student midwife! 1 down- 39 to go!!

Thanks everyone- it was just wonderful and it was especially lovely as I'd got to know her antenatally and will be doing postnatal follow up in the coming days. I'm also fantastically lucky to have such a supportive mentor. ( This is starting to sound a bit like an Oscar's speech!)
Looking forward to hearing about all the other first years catches in the coming weeks and months.

    xxxx
