Got a 2000 word essay on the public health role of the midwife that I need to be making a start on soon and im going round in circles trying to think of something to base it on. We have to pick one area, not just do it as a broad topic. Everyone else seems to be sorted with what they're going to do and im starting to panic :sweatdrop:(which isnt helping!) So I would be very grateful for any suggestions that anyone has got, I need to pick something that I'l be able to find plenty of info on and I'd really like something quite original. Dont want much do I!:helpsmilie:

    Hi Lazymoo,

I have a couple of suggestions that might be helpful to you, although not sure if they are what you are looking for.

Sex education and teenage pregnancy, should be plenty of info on that.

    Breast feeding support.

    Smoking cessation.

I have got a book called Midwifery in Public Health which is really good, you may be able to get it from your library.

Good luck, and if I can do anything to help, just let me know.

Thanks for the suggestions midwifemissy, is that book the Padraigh (or however you spell it) one? I think I'v seen it on amazon and was going to get it. Forgot to say that they would like us to base it if possible to public health issues in our trust areas, but im sure that your suggestions would be relevant in all areas so thanks for that I'l look into them. :cheers2:

Your very welcome, glad it was helpful.

Yes, that is the same book, I went a bit mad when I first started the course and bought quite a few books, but at least I don't have to keep everything crossed that no one requests them from the uni library just when I need them

Good luck with your assignment, hope you find everything you need for it. It is a nightmare trying to find all the information isn't it?

    OBESITY

Has massive public health implications for the midwife - you can link in the CEMACH/CEMACE reports - which state that thromboembolism and pre-eclampsia/eclampsia are the biggest cause of maternal death, which are inextricably linked with obesity (obese = higher risk of thromboembolism, pre-eclampsia, diabetes etc etc).

There are also issues surrounding midwives' care of women - difficulty finding FH, bigger equipment needed, extra scans for fetal wellbeing etc.
There are psychological issues for obese pregnant women too - many people don't recognise that these women are pregnant, which can be heartbreaking for these women. There is also prejudice and stigma involved.

You could even look at how midwives can use their public health "muscle" in tackling obesity - there is a clinic up in Humberside (I think) called the monday clinic, which is really innovative in supporting women with obesity. If you'd like some more information, PM me and I can send you some more.

Obesity is really interesting (I think so anyway) and is brilliant looking at it from the perspective of "what can we, as midwives do to help".

teenage pregnancy is a good one to do - there's loads of stuff around this. domestic violence is a good one too - i did one of my reflective public health accounts on this.
