Read any good books lately?

Textbooks aside, has anyone got any favourite reads?
Ony of my top favourite books is the Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini? Has anyone else read it? It is fantastic. Apparently the film is coming out in December, can't wait!! It's all about life in Afghanistan for a young boy and his best friend before the civil war. This description doesn't do any justice to it and makes It sound very dry but the language and description is incredible and the story is so powerful, I couldn't put it down, and shed many tears (love these types of books!). The second book by this author, A Thousand Splendid Suns, is just as fantastic. This book deals with how women are treated in Afghanistan... There is one shocking part where the main character is in labour, during the peak of the civil war, and she has no rights to health care, and no male doctors are allowed to look after her. In the end, she has to have a caesarean section without any pain relief, other than a stick to bite down on. It's appalling and the sad thing is that this type of thing must still be going on. It certainly inspired thoughts in me of wanting to go out there and help these women. Two must-reads!

Oh, what are they all about?

I know it's really bad but i haven't finished a 'proper' book since i was heavily pregnant a couple of years ago. And i reckon i won't have the time from now on until the end of time (or career hahaha).

Anyway, it was called Place of Reeds by Caitlin Davies. I read and re-read it (unusual for me to do). It's a true story about a British woman who meets and falls in love with a Bostwanan at Uni in the US. She moves to Africa with him and spends 12 years there in the 90s and witnesses the increase in AIDS, urbanisation and violence. It's a story about women, motherhood, traditions and clashing cultures. The decrisption of the landscape and willderness is so vivid. Totally recommend it. Escapism.

So do I- did you know the Golden Compass (aka Northern Lights) is hitting the cinemas next month?????? :jump:

YES! My daughter read them then passed them to me with a 'must read' post it . I am nearly finished the third, but loved 'The subtle knife' ahhh.

Her books are awe inspiring. They have me in flood of tears. What a woman.

Well now the exam is over, I am heading to the library tomorrow to get a couple of these recommended books out. I did manage to read over the holidays eleven hours by paullina simons. Typical midwifery student reading a book about a woman who is term and gets abducted by this freak and thats all I can tell you.

The only thing I've read besides books on natural birth are the Harry Potter books, so I am feeling out of the literary loop, so to speak. Which is very odd for me, because I have always devoured books, literally since I could read! I guess I enjoy the escapism...I'll be keeping an eye out for the suggested ones here, though!
