I know how I felt when I opened my copy of bjm this month and saw the huge formula ad across two pages.
This seems like a massive contradiction for what midwives are trying to do.
Of course women should have more than one option for feeding and be supported in it but it feels like all the hard work of promoting breastfeeding is going out of the window perhaps?

Oh and i am unsubbing from it.

My mind wasn't made up until reading the comments though I didn't agree with it. One thing that's majorly swayed me is the fact they refuse to pay for their ad space! I def say get rid, giving them free advertising seems so wrong. As said, the other journals manage, they don't charge a fortune then half fill their journals with formula ads. I only have one copy but the ads are ridiculous not to mention pointless as I completely ignore them. Wonder if they'll take the hint if loads of people unsubscribe? Probs not. Glad I read this before voting as I usually vote first but this has made my mind up. Shame as it's a great educational resource otherwise, but I say bye bye BJM...

Midwives shouldn't be swayed by adverts though, it is their professional responsibility to ensure they are well informed with up to date evidence, not rely on ads. I don't have a problem at all with the ads in the bjm and I don't believe in cutting one's nose off to spite one's face however I think given the money they are raking in, it's a cheek how expensive the journal is and I don't subscribe because I can't afford it.

Having said that I don't see what benefit smnet gets from having the bjm button, everybody knows they are there, there are enough threads askimg whjat journals are available so it's not like we would be hiding the existence from new members so it should go imo.

Yes i know midwives shouldn't be swayed by adverts but then 'why' are there formula milk adverts in the British Journal of Midwifery? It is essentially to advertise that product to midwives isn't it. It doesn't mean that midwives will be swayed by the advert but it does mean that they are trying to do that by putting them there in the first place.

Just because midwives shouldn't be swayed, doesn't mean they aren't. I doubt they would pay for all the advertisements if they didn't expect, and then see, some profitability in it.

An evidence based journal seems an entriely unsuitable place for these kind of adverts to me.

I agree it's an innapropriate place for the ads, just they don't bother me or sway my practice and if the companies see profit having them in there then getting rid of the ads is only treating the symptoms of a problem, not getting rid of the problem iyswim
