Thanks so much iolaus. Absolutely fascinating. Horribly, horribly tragic but very thought provoking. X

Finally got a chance to finish this one, I had thought earlier on it was going to be one of Queen Victoria's miscarriages but then when I read the date again I realised it wasn't. Now I know why you were reluctant to give too much detail about the family's social status :).

When I read the summary I had an aha! Moment about instrumental deliveries, just as you said yourself it's amazing how a knee-jerk reaction nearly 200 years ago still impacts midwifery today. I'm reading a history od midwives at the moment, I find the history of the profession so interesting.

Thanks for this and all the other COTWs, you are contributing so much to the education of us students and wannabes :)

I've got a copy of it, it's sold on Amazon from some second-hand sellers and only costs about £5. Mine's an old library copy as well. It's a very interesting book, I've just read about Princess Charlotte and her son, very sad. Reading about Queen Anne's obstetric history was very sad as well.

When I looked before all the second hand copies were about £70 - maybe I'll put it on my SS list for next year

There are some threads on here about Royal Births in history - mainly from that book
    Queen Anne (1665 - 1714)
    Princess Charlotte (1796 - 1817)
    Queen Victoria (1819 - 1901)

£70?! Blimey, mine was definitely nowhere near that. I've just had a look on Amazon, there's one on there for £4.98 but the rest are quite expensive. I never realised it was so hard to get hold of when I bought it.

I am late to this as I am new and only just catching up but basically this varies from person to person. Some midwives and GPs won't give the tablets which tbh seems cruel and unnecessary. When I delivered Isabella I was briefly spoken to about milk coming in but I was still bfing my 1 year old son so it wasn't important to me to stop my milk x
