That said I didn't have a job when I qualified and didn't feel confident that I would - I had 2 offers within 2 months

I can see why so many students take up the job offers in Oz and NZ.....

A lead midwife told me that about 45% of midwives in the south west are going to be coming up to retirement age in the next 4 to 5 years, hopefully statistics are on our side....

I wouldn't take surveys like that as gospel. A lot of them are done on a small scale in one area of the country and are not representative of the general midwifery population. If you want to know about job prospects i'd look at the university's website it will tell you all of that. Also, speaking to some of the local midwives might reassure you. I did and they told me that all their student midwives were being poached as soon as they were due to graduate.

My uni has a 100% employment rate for their midwifery students for those that applied for jobs!! I think that if you want a job bad enough, you will get one! Obviously that little birthing centre in the middle of nowhere wud be hard, but if you were more open minded then there are defo jobs out there!! x
