I'm finding it very frustrating not being able to apply for the bursary yet! Trying to be organised as there's gonna be so much going on by summer. It's extremely risky to employ someone for childcare when I don't know for definite that I'll be able to pay them- ggrrrrr!

That's exactly how I feel about selecting the hours at nursery, it's going to be a gamble! x

Wondering if it's really do-able on a student loan and bursary. I'm on benefits at the moment and have a rubbish credit rating so won't be able to get loans from anywhere else, even in a crisis. I'm used to living on a low income but don't know if bursary and loans willcover it all. Anyone know if you can still get housing benefit as a student :(

not sure on housing benefit but you don't pay council tax as a student, does direct gov website have any info?... is there anything i can begin applying for (i don't have any offers yet) in preperation for when i get my place, obviously not bursary but i've had a student loan in the past and feel that the application for this could be drawn out and a pain in the bum! x

You can get housing benefit if you have a child but it is all calculated on individual circumstances and is dependant on income and level of rent etc.

    So I realise we get:
    NHS bursary (means tested)
    Maintenance loan (non means tested)

And the website says something about a £1000 grant. Where does this come from?

    Thanks :):):)

The £1000 comes from the NHS in addition to your bursary I think :) xx

Wicked, thanks :). So I can officially send off my student finance for the £2342 amount. I was hesitant in case I was entitled to anything else xx

Heya, I'm new to all this and trying to figure out what financial support is available for people doing the course. I've already done a degree (graduated last year), so will I be able to get another student loan? (maintenance I mean, I know the tuition fees are sorted). Is it possible to then apply for the bursary on top? Or is the bursary less if you get a loan from student finance?

I want to study Midwifery so bad but this financial stuff is making me feel like it's going to be impossible, anybody know if it's actually do-able with no savings or income from elsewhere? I know some people have said that if you really want it you can make it happen, but I have no savings at all, and what I do manage to save will be needed to get a car to take me to where I need to go (my old banger is on it's last legs).

    Any help/advise is much appreciated!!

    Hi Guys,

So I am confused. I was having a look through the NHS bursaries website and read this:

"At this time new and continuing students who have been invited to apply should create an account and complete an online application via the Bursary Online Support System (BOSS)."

So I went online and created an account and worked through the application form for 2012. No where does it ask for a specific number or anything from the uni. Then I went back and read this:

"To apply for an NHS bursary, including any additional allowances, you must be offered either a conditional or unconditional place on an NHS funded course at a University or Higher Education Institution in England.
Shortly afterwards, your university will pass your personal details to NHS Student Bursaries and we will send you a letter or email which will notify you how to create your own personal online account which you will then use to make an application for an NHS Bursary"

So.....does that mean the account I've created is wrong? If I hit send what happens?

    DDx
