Hey - Does anyone have any good links to dites or documants they could send regaing the midwifes role during the ante-natal, intra-partum and post-natal periods. I have the NICE Guidelines but struggling to find anything else on the net.

    Thanks in advance

I'm in the middle of doing an assignment and presentation on the role of the midwife
You need to look at the NMC guidelines http://www.nmc-uk.org/aArticle.aspx?ArticleID=1673
    and standards http://www.nmc-uk.org/aArticle.aspx?ArticleID=1658
and the midwives rules and standards http://www.nmc-uk.org/aDisplayDocument.aspx?documentID=169
    Think about things like;

    Consent
    Communication
    Accountability
    Evidence based care
    Confidentiality
    Sphere of practise
    Individualised care
    Health promotion and education
    and record keeping

Thats just off the top of my head I'll send you my references when I'm done if you want.

When do you need it by?

the main info is all what has been posted above. The NMC is the Nursing and Midwifery Council and so they decide all of the rules and codes of conducts for people both on the nursing and midwifery register, and also for students on pre-reg courses. have a good look around the NMC site -there is a section on the role of a midwife, but the main references you'll need to learn are NMC (2004) Midwives rules and standards, and NMC (2008) The code. and then everything that they talk about -so that is consent, record keeping, sphere of practise, supervision etc etc (as mentioned above)

    good luck.

you could also try NHS choices website which has an overview of the role of the midwife i think??? just an idea don't know how credible it is though.
