As part of the management of a PPH for my OSCE scenario I said that Syntocinon 40IU/500mls saline would be infused over a four hour period at 1.25mls/hr instead of 125mls/hr. Have I failed?! As technically its a drug error, I'm guessing I have... :'(

Hmm possibly sorry. 1.25mls/hr although not likely to cause harm per se, would not actually do enough to control the PPH.
We were always told to say 'given at the recommended regime as per protocol' if we were insure- then obviously elaborate if asked (so we still had to know it really). If we were asked and then got it wrong then I presume we'd have failed.

    Fingers crossed for you though.

Said an SHO or experienced obstetrician would be administering the infusion but, as you say, I need to know the correct dose... I just said it wrong!!

Don't quote me on it, but i think you would lose marks for it rather than fail because of it... If it were the other way around then you might have more of a problem but as Roo said, it wouldn't harm her having less, it just wouldn't work! xxx

also you did say the correct dosage, correct amounts and correct times - it was just the 500/4 that you messed up

also in practise you would have checked it with someone else (especially as we are doing this from a point of a student not a qulaified midwife) so the person you would check it with would probably question you

Possibly. I failed an exam last year for giving 5ui of syntometrine. I had otherwise passed the exam with flying marks. Hope this isn't the case for you xx
