im nearly at the end of my first placement and Ive just started doing my final interview with my mentor. I think i am being unfairly marked as ive got a safe, 5 and 6 so far when i think my practise is a little bit better at least 6/7. I have only worked with this mentor for 2 weeks and just feel a bit ¤¤¤¤¤¤. she hasnt completed my whole cpad yet so maybe it might improve but im feeling a bit down. :(

Try not to worry too much. I know it feels really horrible when you think you deserve more. Problem with marks is that although there is guidance, they're always going to be a bit subjective at the end of the day, and some people mark more harshly than others. There's also the whole thing of do you mark the student for her competence at this point in her training (ie you can't expect a first year to be at the level of a third year) which is how it should be, or do you mark her looking at how you'd expect a student to be when she's nearly finished. Of course, it makes sense for the marks to reflect how you're doing against what you'd expect of someone at that stage of her training, but some mentors don't seem to understand that ('oh well, you're only a first year so I couldn't give you any more than ....').

I agree marks are very subjective. At the moment our grades are all based on our academic work but obviously we have to pass placement. They're changing our programme from Sept so that our grades are based on academic work and we will also be graded on our practice. I asked the question about grading and whether mentors will all grade similarly and the tutors said that they will be given lots of guidance but I can't help thinking that there are some mentors that will award high grades easily whilst others will not grade in the same way. For this reason I think it's very subjective. Try not to get too downhearted about the marks you have already, as you say, you still have some of your competencies to be signed off so your grades may well differ by the end of your placement. Chin up :) xx

i think shes marking me too harshly, i know its very subjective but they have a whole book on how to mark us...we are novices and are meant to b marked as such....i will see how she marks me tomoz and go by that...x

Ours mark us from 1to10 for each section based on what year we are in...ie its ok to get a 9 or a 10 by the end of the first year because the criteria for 2nd year steps up a level and is marked against that. I agree its subjective...I can remember getting a reasonable mark for stuff I know my 'mentor' hadnt even witnessed when I was on postnatal as I was left fending for myself the majority of the time so couldnt work out how she could be expected to grade me.

Our mentors are guided to give low marks too so that we have 'somewhere to go' - it's just the way it is. My mentor couldn't have been more lovely, supportive and complimentary but I got 4s 5s and one or two 6s :) so try not to take it personally, though I agree it seems naff

We have this too, however we are expected to really get 8-10 out of 10 as they are based on the level we are at the moment not the level we will be in 6 months time etc. However the mentors sometimes don't believe you and mark you as if its the whole three years and give you a 3 so that you can work your way up to 10 by the end of 3 years - err no not how it works.

If you have a problem with it speak to your tutor or your link lecturer x

It's funny how the marking schemes differ. Sounds like lots of you get a mark out of 10. We can only get 40% = pass, 55% = good, 70% = very good and 85% = excellent and nothing else! Then the overall mark for the module is calculated where 75% is the theory mark and 25% the practical!
