SMNET are proud to be working with the fabulous 'Women and Children Tanzania' who offer midwifery and nursing study tours as well as elective placements in Northern Tanzania. I'm sure you will all join me in welcoming them to our lovely community :) ! These services are offered to our lovely members - for midwives, organised by a midwife! For more info and to see how you can take advantage of the fantastic and exciting opportunities they offer, please see here!

Women and Children Tanzania is owned by Frances who graduated with a first class honours BSc in Midwifery. Frances
spent her elective placement in Tanzania, organised by a large 'voluntourism' company, but was dissatisfied with several aspects of her experience and began to reflect on how she would do things differently. Her main objective being to introduce a more supportive partnership between maternity services in the West and Tanzania and to improve maternal health on both continents. She aims to promote this by promoting skill sharing and learning during visits.

Whilst waiting for her NMC registration to be processed, she returned to Tanzania to form professional relationships with hospitals, clinics and orphanages in order to facilitate exciting placements and study tours aimed specifically at midwives, rather than medics.

She has successfully negotiated fully supported placements in a busy maternity ward, a rural dispensary, antenatal clinics and orphanages, which can be fully individualised to meet individual specifications.

Not forgetting the fun aspect of these trips, she has also negotiated discount safaris and cultural trips to ensure the right balance of work and play!

So, if you are thinking about embarking on a midwifery/nursing elective placement and/or study trip, please contact Frances (who also happens to be a very lovely member of SMNET), and she will be only too happy to advise and provide more information.

Bon Voyage, my lovelies :), we look forward to hearing all about your exciting adventures!!

Tanzania sounds like a fantastic experience! I've lived and worked in both Sudan and Nigeria for a total of five and a half years in the past (not in the midwifery field, I hasten to add!) and experiences like these you can not gain from books, TV or any media - it is something that seriously has to be personally experienced to believe! The trials and tribulations that women in developing countries experience on a daily basis (usually with a smile, a song and a steadfast resilience/acceptance of hunger/disease/atrocities/life and death!) makes you feel incredibly humble and fortunate. An experience not to be missed if the opportunity arises! From my personal experiences, I guarantee that anyone who visits Africa, especially in this capacity, will return home with a renewed sense of value, integrity and worth!

I'd love to too Mimi, but in reality I don't see it happening. I'd love to do my elective there but even the money for that would be a struggle. I think it's truly amazing, inspiring change where it's needed the most, changes that could save so many lives x

Guys, see here to read Fran's blog. Frances is the proprietor of Women and Children Tanzania and also a very busy RM. She created Women and Children Tanzania Ltd to enable her to share her experiences and passion for midwifery and Tanzania with other student midwives. She truly is a remarkable woman and does some fantastic work tirelessly trying to improve conditions both for Tanzanian hospitals and ultimately Tanzanian women. Go Frances :) !!
