So I started my voluntary role at an elderly peoples care home yesterday... I have never felt so emotionally drained in my life. I cried, I had nightmares about it last night. I was absolutely not expecting it to be like that. Obviously if I get asked this question in an interview I won't explain all of this, but I wandered what people give as their answer to that question? I had wondered before I started at the care home if I could be a nurse and now I absolutely know I could not do it. Is that a good enough reason?!

I choose midwifery over nursing because midwifery specialises in pregnancy and birth, and working predominantly with women and their babies... whereas nursing doesnt have that privilage. Thats it in a nutshell for me. I choose midwifery because of its differences to nursing and not because of it's similiarities. But im happy to accept all the similarities too...so long as I get to work within the area of pregnancy and birth. xx

I knew from the day i watched my dad pass away from cancer when i was 10 i wanted to work within the NHS..then at 18 I was diagnosed with cancer...i looked on as these people literally saved my life!...I feel working as a nurse would bring too many bad memories back for me but i admire them so much...Midwifery, although not always a happy case, seems to be the right decision for me..and since experiencing having a stillbirth myself i believe my own experience will help me be a superb midwife! :)

I choose midwifery because woman centered care is most important to me. I feel its the best way for me to give the care I want to give to the people I want to give it to first-woman, their babies and their family.
I like the idea of changing something that could potentially be frightening, overwhelming and terrible to something manageable, memorable (for the right reasons) and ease the transition to motherhood and parenthood as well as I can!!

Nursing just doesnt hold the same *feeling* that midwifery does for me :) xx

The role of a nurse can be pretty diverse, it is an appealing career path. However, I chose midwifery because of it's specialist nature and I felt very drawn to it; I enjoy working with pregnant parents, I like the normality of the role, the fascinating subject matter both medical and natural.
