They are different jobs and this is partly the reason for phasing out the conversion course. The way I see it a midwife cares for generally healthy women going through a normal physiological process. There may be deviations from the norm and you may care for very poorly women but nurses deal with sickness, illness and death on a daily basis and this would not be for me. Also without being mean I dont think I could cope working with geriatric patients. Its just a personal thing!

    Couldn't agree more!

I think the reason why i first looked into Midwifery was because i've always wanted to work in a hospital, i always knew i wanted to care for people but knew i didn't want to be a nurse (for numerous reasons!). So when i started to look into Midwifery i just fell in love with it! And then when i became pregnant with my son i found i had so much respect and love for my Midwives and could see the sheer enjoyment they got from their job (they were always so happy!), i just knew there was no other profession for me!

ok not being funny here but im a nurse and yes we do deal with death but my god we deal with life too!!! lots and lots of it lol - we do get a hard press but nursing is soo much more than bed changing, meds and feeding people - it may seem like that to others but we work in so many different areas these days. So now you will ask why i want to jump ship - well ive always wanted to be a midwife and have been told to do my nursing first and get a wide experience of everything going. So I have and no regrets and now im ready to move on

Again, I can't put my finger on it, pregnancy is such an important time in a womans life and something most women will go through and yet how often do you hear about people having bad experiences, it's just not right!! An event that occurs thousands of times a day should not be so fruaght with fear, pain and disappointment...... I just want to help one woman at a time enjoy their pregnancy and birth experience from beginning to end.

    Well said!

Nurses do a fantastic job and I agree with acmacdonald that they certainly do deal more with life than death but it's still not the same as midwifery.

I don't want to mainly work with people who are ill. Pregnancy, childbirth and adjusting to motherhood are my areas of interest, midwifery is all about that, but nursing is not.
