I'm 15 and was wondering if anyone could suggest any work experience that would be avaliable for someone of my age? I have already written letters to both NHS and inderpendant Midwifes but not sure if they will be able to offer me anything due to my age :? If this is not possible does anyone know of anything related that would help me in the future?
    :) x

Hi Hun welcome to studentmidwife.net!! as far as I am aware you need to be 18 in hospitals. I don't know about sure start or anywhere else though. I dont think an independent midwife will allow it either. Good luck xx

    Hi Leah,

I attended antenatal classes as an observer aged 17 which i found to be really useful in gaining more knowledge about the role of the midwife, maybe you could contact your local hospital about this?

Hope you manage to find something :)

    xxx

Even when I turned 18 there was no maternity related experience really in my area to benefit from that I could access, even though my college course requires 300 hours and we have a dedicated placement organiser.

You could try NCT, SureStart, ring nurseries/gp/hospitals to see if they have any babies and bumps or ante/post natal classes (phone, or letter if you prefer) if you read through http://www.studentmidwife.net/i-wan...king-of-applying-74/5621-work-experience.html you might find a few ideas.

I wouldn't stress about it too much, what many of us have done is broaden the search a little more (school, nursery's, day centres) and focus on applicable transferable skills.

When I was 15, I did work experience shadowing a midwife through parent craft sessions and a breast feeding clinic. It's just a matter of finding the right person in your area to write to x

My son is 15 and had trouble finding work experience recently as most places like you to be over 16. He did volunteer in a secondary school in a different area to where he goes to school and really enjoyed it. He was a classroom assistant for years 7,8 and 9.

NCT is a good place to start, some midwives may be happy for you to sit in an antenatal group and listen. Good luck xx
