Default Advice please RE implant removal.

I am sorry to bring this up on here as it is not midwifery related, as you know I am wanting my implant removed because we want another baby but also because of the side effects, I have had headaches, feel sick alot and I am such a moody C*W my partner said I am a different person since having this in. I asked to have it removed at the beginning of this month and was told to wait!!! Does anybody know if they can refuse to take this out? I have looked on another forum and women claim the dr's have refused to take it out, surely it is my body and so my choice?? When I had it they said it could be removed whenever I wanted it out???

That doesn't sound right to me - they should be giving you some kind of reason if they don't want to take it out, and I can't think of any. I presume the doctor is thinking that if you give it more time the side effects will settle down, but if you have made up your mind then there is nothing to it. Go back to the doctors and book in for the minor procedure.

I also have it in and the doc said at the time that they like to leave it in for at least 6 months, this is to allow your body to adjust, but as you are not just having it removed due to the side-effects I don't see why he should not take it out. Did you tell him you wanted a baby?

I had my implant removed at my local family planning, they just ask you why and make sure you are having it removed for the right reasons. No Doctors or nurse or Family planning nurse can refuse to remove it thats actually a breech of ther role to you as a patient. I had mine removed in the December and was pregnant by the end of January,,, xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

No probs, Minkymoo, it is midwifery related really, huh? contraception and fertility, menstruating and stuff!

I would say go back to your Gp or go to the local family planning clinic as everyone else has said, they have to take it out if you wish it, they are reticent to, as they are so expensive.

I would explain you want it out mainly to try for a baby aswell!

Good luck, let us know how you get on?!

Hi Donna, i also have the implant, and the number one reason why they dont like taking it out is because of how much they cost to make- about £120, and they like for it be in for at least 9mths. But if u want it out, cant see how they can refuse- especially if ur moody- like me!!!lol! I now got bona fide medical PMS cos of it!!! xx

Could that be the progesterone action? In the same way progesterone softens the pelvis (and consequently some other joints causing pain for some women) in pregnancy?

Thats what I was thinking, I had really bad pains when I was on depo-dr reckoned it had nothing to do with hormonal changes and now I have had the implant for about 4 months and it's excrutiatingly painful-painkillers don't work at all. May go to family planning as opposed to GP to see if they know anything.

blimey -tell them you want it out because you can't live with the side effects! why should anyone have to put themselves through something that could easily be reversed!! i know my doc wanted me to be sure i wanted it out (i gave it 9 months but was bleeding on and off pretty much all the time) -i was sure, so no further questions asked!!

we decided to try for a baby prior to having it taken out -tried to wait until i had a proper period afterwards -that never came though, i was pregnant straight away. i never had a LMP date in my notes -just the date i had my implant out!! quite memorable for me!
