Need to vent............
DD3 had her pre school jabs on Tues, the nurse did one injection into each leg and then as we were about to leave she stopped us and said " i think i've missed one", she refered to the 'red book' and said "i haven't given her the Men C", i said 'oh, ok can we do it now and get it over with' as she was upset anyway and i didn't want to have to bring her back. Nurse agreed and Beanie had another injection. That night the usual red lump came up at the site of the injections but thought nothing of it, then Wednesday the red mark got worse and much bigger. Thought i would wait til today to see if the inflamation went down, when i saw it this morning the lump and redness had spread significantly i rang the doctors and they wanted to see her straight away....when i got there the nurse took me to one side an apologised, she had given my daughter an injecion that wasn't needed. She has been given an extra Men C jab, all of which she has already had. Then went straight into see the doctor, who also apologised, has prescribed a week of anti biotics , anti inflamatries (sp) and i have to go back tomorrow morning or a & e if it continues to spread. I've since come home and though "WHAT?" i didn't even ask what the implications are? Hopefully she'll be fine but i think the reality of what could have happened has just hit me! Rant over, thanks for listening Jo x

To be honest the red book is a flipping nightmare, i think that is where the confusion has started from. I've looked through all my kids red books and all four are different. Even the immunisation schedules are different in each one! It appears that since my daughter had her baby jabs they have changed again so the nurse didn't follow what she had already had and what she needed.
As for complaining, my head was all over the place and i think i will see what happens to Beanie over the next few days first then get my head straight.

Oh your poor daughter!
You are right, te red books only confuse matters, when my son was small and we had moved the new HV couldn't see that he had had all his injections because the carbon copy (which is left in the book) was really faint, if I hadn't been sure and absolutely insistent I think he would have ended up with more injections as she really wasn't happy to take my word for it but thankfully she let it drop until his medical notes eventually arrived and could see for herself.

It is frightening really what can happen, i feel slightly guilty that i wasn't aware myself of whether she should or shouldn't have been given the jab! I've just checked the area and it has spread again so i'm gonna give her the next dose of medicines and her bath and if it's looking worse it's off to drop in for us, don't wanna rush to a & e with 4 kids! Hubby is on lates tonight.

Ah Jo hope you haven't had to rush off to the drop in and your daughter is feeling better. Don't be hard on yourself they move the goalposts and change the schedules all the time and then start adding more in to try and catch up for certain children, there is no way you can possibly keep track. The HV however should know and should know what needs to be done and should be able to follow from the red book what needs to be given and what doesn't.
Where the two doses of Men C given in the same day? No expert on these things but I wouldn't of thought that if an extra dose was given with an adequate interval that it should of caused a problem becaue they do normally need to have a booster of these injections anyway, but can see that two injections of the same vaccine in the same day is likely to cause a problem. Anyway hope she is feeling much better soon x x x |

Aw Jo, I didn't mean to make you feel guilty, it is hard to know what they are supposed to have and I meant that it was lucky I knew because she was really persausive and if I had any doubts I would have let him have another lot. I didn't know the exact list of what he'd had, just that he had had all three lots of the ones they get at 2 months, 3 months and 4 months, she couldn't see that he'd had his 4 month lot, I wouldn't have known what diseases they immunised him against, just the timings of the jabs.
I really hope your daughter gets better soon. xx

Well i've just got home from a 4 day stint in hospital with Bean. I had to take her to A&E Thursday afternoon as her leg got a lot worse and she was admitted straight away and has been on introvenous (SP?) antibiotics. She still has 5 days left of the course but is allowed to take it orally so they've let her come home. What a nightmare!!!! Never wanna go through that again. Now i have come home to my youngest with an ear infection too......oh the joy!
