Default Hello from Holland

Hi everyone,

I'm a third year student midwife in Holland and read an article recently inviting international students to this site in the publication from the KNOV - the Dutch RCM.

I am an English mum of four (!) and had secured a place at Kings to study midwifery just before we had to move to Holland because of my husbands work. We have been here for 4 years now and after hastily learning Dutch I was lucky enough to secure a place on the 4 year midwifery training programme here in Rotterdam.

Midwifery is very different in Holland, as many of you may have heard - home birth is the first choice for most women here and we currently maintain a 35% home birth rate.

The training is of course very much geared towards this culture of home delivery - midwives run their own group practices and work a combination of 24 on-call shifts for labouring mums and clinics 2 or 3 times a week, depending on the client base.

I am now half way through my third year of study and have delivered 31 babies to date - more than half of these at home. Whether we will stay here after I have completed my training, I am not sure. I would love to come back to the UK and try and incorporate some of the working models that are so successful here in Holland. It's not a perfect system but has a lot to offer and I'm sure I could use my experiences here to help improve practice in the UK.

Now, back to my research!

Elinor

Great to have you onboard Elinor! Welcome and wow! having to learn Dutch so fast and now you are studying midwifery in it! Brilliant stuff! I am so jealous of your training, half the babies at home, that is fantastic! I look forward to hearing lots more about your course and the attitudes in Holland to pregnancy, birth and the care of women and babies.....

Can you let me have a copy of the article where you found us? thanks

JJx
