Hello Tracy!

Welcome to the forum!

Firstly.. I hope you're enjoying your access course. I've just finished doing the same one and start uni in september! I've found the course so useful, getting me back into education, socialising, links from college to uni etc. I have really enjoyed it!

As for your age. Most cohorts range from 18-late 40s. Some even having a few in their 50s. Your age won't hold you back! If anything, you'll have more life experience to use in your PS/interview, more transferable skills for midwifery and a more mature head on your shoulders! Don't put a downer on yourself because of your age. Midwives come in all ages, shapes and sizes!

Where will you be applying to?

Good luck, lovey
Noo xx

Hi Tracy, a huge welcome form another mature student (only an age thing you understand, I can be very immature when I want to!!)

I did access too, and enjoyed it, have you applied yet?

Hope you enjoy it here and stick around, there's loads here to help with your application.

As a mature student you have a lot of interpersonal skills and life experience to offer, as on the course to get through, self-awareness is a biggie

The youngest ladies in our cohort are 18, the oldest I think 49! So don't let your age worry you hun!

Hi Tracy

Welcome to the site. I don't think age matters, I am over 40 and hoping to start my Access course this year and then apply for Midwifery Sept 2009.

Age is just a number, its passion, experience and determination that counts.

Hi welcome to the site. I too am a mature student and when i did my nursing there were people in my class in their fifties. Don't worry about that, many people have a career change later on, i think it shows true passion x

I too wondered about that when I applied a few years ago. It actually helped that I was older (now 42 and a 4th year). The mentors and clinical staff certainly speak to you with more respect than they do the younger students. Life experiences also help you get through the course, which at times can be overwhelming. Good luck with everything.

Hey Tracey,

Going by your ID im asusming you're in your 40's - assuming the 1962 is your year of birth.

Thats not old... there are people starting the midwifery course in their 50's!

Your age will only hold you back if you beleive it will. Yes, you will probebly die if you try keeping up with the 18 yr olds who go out 5 nights a week and get i a 3 and turn up for a 9am lecture - i know i would and im only 28! They do say that some times when your older it takes u longer to retain new info - again i suffer from this at 28! In short, if you put the work in, there is nothing that can hold you back!

Best of luck and keep us updated on your application process for 2009! Tip for you, get started on your personal statement now so that as soon as the application date opens you can send it straight away... some uni's look at apps when they come in and offer interviews straight away and when their spaces are gone they are gone.... others hold on to all aps til the closing dates and offer interviews all at once. get the application in straight away!

Good luck.

Hi Tracey, welcome.

All the best with your application, as has already been said, your maturity just means you have more experience. Also, totally agree with UKcyberchick about not trying to keeo up with the 18 year olds, it makes me tired just thinking about it, I can't believe it was only 10 years ago I could easily go out until 3am and get up at 7am! It would kill me now! It does take more effort to retain info as you get older but you're also more likely to have the will and determination to study harder. Good luck and keep us posted!!
