Default mature student

Hello everyone,

I am new to this site and i've been reading some of your little stories which are fab so i thought i would join in. I'm a mature student age 37 and a mum with 3 children 15,12 and 3. I have just completed my first year on the Pre-Access course at my local college and will be starting my Access to health course this september.

My ambition is to become a midwife I have waited 15 years for the chance to study. Does anyone have any tips for me when i apply to several universities for the 3yr midwifery course i will be applying this september. I have been told it's extremely hard to gain a place on these courses. Any advise would be appreciated

Thank you all very much!!!!!!!

Hi Chocky (love the name btw, it has just reminded me I have choc-ices in the freezer, lol, sorry!)

Anyway, welcome to the site, glad you are enjoying it and well done for posting!!

Browse the applications and interviews areas, and personal statements too.

Yes it is very competitive, but lots of us get in.

My biggest tips would be to leanr the role of the midwife really well, don't discuss your own personal experiences too much and show how passionate you are about midwifery. These should stand out in your ps and communicated well in your interview.

Good luck, if you need any help, just shout, there is always someone here to help!

Hi chocky
I agree with what smwife says. Preparation is the key. You have to have a very strong personal statement to be called for interview, so follow past advice and find out as much as you can, your passion will shine through after that x

Hi again!!

Thank you very much for the advise, i will do my research and get myself prepared. My ps is scary i want to get it right so it stands out. I do volunteer work with children so i hope this will help. I have also wrote to 4 hospitals asking to work as a volunteer within the maternity ward. But sadly i've had no letters back, or phone calls, or emails.

Any tips on getting into the hospitals! as a volunteer!!!

I really do appreciate any help offered! going to Edge-Hill Uni tomorrow for their open day. Just wondered if anyone else is attending.

Thank you .........................you're all very kind.

Hi chocy
i am replying to your advice on applying to uni. i have wanted to become a midwife since i was about 12 when i learnt what it was, but i got sick and had to put it off. i now have my offer for edge hill for sept 08, i cant wait. it has been a long hard slog but it was well worth it. when i started my access course, i went to every open day at edge hill as that was my first choice. i made sure all the staff knew who i was, which really helped. as for your personal statemen, talk about yourself personally a little, as they like to know you have outside interests. make sure you talk about how passionate you are, and why you are so passionate. if you want i will give you some proper advice through e mail about ya PS because i was toldmine was very good. try your very est to do something to make you stand out from the crowd. i did holistic therapies, so i am now a Holistic Therapist, doing aromatherapy massage reflexology and indian head massage. in ya PS talk about the Holistic role of the midwife as this is v important in todays society. i worked as a lvolunteer at Liverpool Womens have you applied? this gets you a certificate to prove you have experience. i dont mind sending you a snippet of my personal statement if you want it. take care and good luck x i am planning going to the next open day so if you are going let m know i will meet you and give you some more advice, as i now do it for my college with the careers dept.
