Default Portsmouth Newbie

Hi All

Wanted some serious and hones feedback before I apply. I was offered a place at Canterbury Christchurch Uni 3 years ago but even though I passed the Occy Health, the Director of the Programme at the Uni decided that I was too 'large' to be able to undertake the course. (She was a size 6 if that!). I was devastated at the time and through myself back to my old work (safe!). However, I've decided to apply again, this time Bournemouth (Portsmouth Campus) this 2008 but wanted to ask any student midwife, midwife or anyone else in the know, if my size (dress 28) would mean I couldn't undertake the training. I'm currently losing weight to be able to fulfil my dream (4 stone lost so far) but don't think I could handle the rejection on weight alone again! Honest answers appreciated.

Thanks

Hello Carly.

I would guess that if your size does not affect your ability to carry out your duties as a student midwife and OH passes you as fit to practise.. I cannot see why you should not be able to do your training if you have gained a place!

Welcome to the forum and good luck with your application/training xxx

Hiya - how flaming awful! I can't believe they did that! I'm a big girl and the only thing I've had a problem with size wise is the scrubs we have to wear for theatre and delivery suite placements. Having said that - getting friendly with the porters so far has done the trick - they fish out a couple of big sets which I keep in a locker.

You sound like your doing great guns weight loss wise so probably won't be an issue by the time you start! Plus I'm sure different hospitals are better or worse at accommodating us!

I'm still fuming about last time - if occy health said yes - who the heck are they to say no - on the grounds of size - its outrageous!

Good luck - go for it - and be sure to keep us posted!

Hx

Hi, I think that is rather unfair, as long as you have no major health problmes affecting your ability to trian and sudequently practice as a midwife, I fail to see what difference your size makes!

There are plenty of large midwives who have no problem (well, they have the same problem with scrubs, but that is all)

Honestly?

if you are well, and well done for losing 4 stone btw, that must've been hard, then go for it!

Wow thats unbelievable and quite an antagonistic ignoramous view to take, hope your okay this time, and good luck with everything, well done for losing the weight so far, I'd be tempted to stuff myself and comfort eat if someone said that to me, especially as thats why I got so big in the 1st place x

Hi and welcome.

That is truly awful what they did to you last time. Well done you for losing so so much weight, it is really hard going losing weight, you should be really proud of yourself.

I wish you luck in applying this year and see no reason why they should fail you on your weight. Surely there must be some governing body you could have complained to last time. Then again, in your position I would have been too disheartened to bother. Don't let it put you off applying again, you've got all us lot to support you this time around. x

Hi Carly.... I'm definately with everyone else on this one if OH say yes you're okay and you've been offered a place then your size should absolutely not matter one bit!

I was soooo annoyed for you when I read this, well done for not letting them stop you reach your dream...they are complete nutcases if they see that as a valid reason to turn you down.

I would definately go for it again and Good Luck with your application!
