Hi,

Welcome to the site, good luck with your course and congratulations on getting a place.

If you don't do this now, you will only regret it, so I say 'go for it'

Hi Birthventure,

I have just found this thread following your message - I can understand all of your concerns re starting this course and from your post I echo what everyone else has said: you will make a great midwife.

I am in a similar situation to you in that I am 36, have three children and currently work for the NHS in the maternity office so I can relate to your anxiety about the politics of it all. But I still have faith in the system and in myself and am still very much drawn to this profession

However, practically-speaking, I am still awaiting confirmation from my manager that I can work reduced shifts (two Sundays per month) as all secondments have been withdrawn and I am unlikely to get anything bursary-wise so money worries are there on the horizon for me, too, although I am not thinking too much about them at the moment.

I am also worried about the impact the course will have on the kids. As well as the impact on my mother, who thinks I should be staying at home.. My husband is, thankfully, however, very supportive.

This role seems to be a natural progression from the one that you are already doing and it would seem a lost opportunity if you don't follow it through.

Keep us updated xx

PS: Which hopsital have you been allocated?

Hi and welcome to the site - congratulations on getting your place, I can only echo what the lovely ladies have already said - seems like you are the ideal person to be a midwife and to care enough about giving women the empowerment to have the birth they want. I work within the NHS and I've seen firsthand some of the bitchiness that happens BUT I have also come into contact with some wonderful people!! I think it's like any workplace - you get some gems and some horrors LOL!!
Good luck with everything, as far as the juggling act goes - you'll be fine - us women always manage it somehow!!!

Hi Jo, I know exactly where you're coming from, and experience some of it first-hand nearly everyday that i work.
you sound like you have a good idea what to expect, which in some ways is a good thing- i was so fresh-faced when i started in september, have been in some ways broken and disheartened by the reality of it, but now i'm getting stronger and am starting to build up a belief in myself that i can and will make a difference.

It can be hard being in hospital- but then noone said it would be easy, and everybody does the best that they can. You cant win them all, but if the person you are caring for feels just a little more positive and supported about their birth, then its a job well done.

you are realistic, which is a good thing- and have faith in yourself and that the system will change- It sounds like the NHS needs midwives like you!

and, also, an NHS high risk obstetric unit is not the be-all and end-all of midwifery, there are many other options that you may find more positive.

good luck to you, welcome to the site and keep us posted!!!

xxxxxxxxx
