Default Another Newbie!

Hi everyone,

My name is Kate, I'm married to Steve and we have a gorgeous daughter, Molly, who is nearly 1.

I have wanted to study midwifery for several years but decided to start a family first. I am about to start training as an Antenatal Teacher with the NCT and hope to apply for the Midwifery degree once I have had another baby. I'm hoping the NCT training (which will get me a Diploma in Higher Education) will count as recent study as I'm 27 and haven't done any study since my A-levels in 1999!! Does anyone know if it will count??!

Anyway, look forward to learning lots on these forums - it seems fab from what I've seen so far.

Good luck to everyone.

Kate

HI Kate welcome to sm.net!

Im not sure if the NCT training will count as recent study, it may be best to check with the uni you will be applying to. However, it will be a great additional experience and most uni's will be thrilled to see that on a personal statement.

Good luck witht he training!

Hi there, thanks for your reply. I have just rung the uni I would be applying to which is Plymouth and they say it will count so that's great! The antenatal teacher training goes into a lot of depth and I have to buy most of the books I will eventually need for the degree so I'm hoping it will be worthwhile. Just about to start reading Spiritual Midwifery.

My husband and I are trying for our second baby at the moment and I want to complete my family before I apply for the degree so I can't see myself starting until about 2011 - sounds ages away and I'm sooooo impatient!!!

Kate

hi there and welcome to the site
it sounds as though you are going to have a really strong application for when the time comes, you just need the baby first!!
best check with plymouth how long they will count the diploma for. You said you dont want to start until 2011, but if you get the diploma this year for example will it still be valid 4 years from now? Am sure it is fine, but had just better check it out first
good luck with everything

Hi Kate! Welcome!

I also had my family first, it's seems a long way off but believe me it will fly by and before you know it, you'll be starting Midwifery! x

Hi Kate!

Welcome to the site, good luck with the baby and training to be an NCT teacher

I would contact Plymouth uni to ask them directly what quals are suitable.

Good luck!

Thanks for all your messages. Have spent the past few days browsing through these forums and getting more and more excited!! The diploma will take 2 years to complete and I'm planning to apply for the degree with a view to starting as soon as after that as possible.

I have been ringing around trying to get some work experience and one hospital has offered me work as a volunteer on the maternity unit. They say I will probably just be chatting to the patients and making cups of tea etc and were very surprised that I was still interested!! In my view, any experience of being on the maternity unit is better than none, even if it is just tea-making... or am I barking up the wrong treee?! Will this be advantageous to me?!

Hi Katie

Welcome, Im glad you are finding the site useful and am delighted to hear that you are planning ahead, thats the best way! You'll get lots of support, tips, guidance and new friends on here to help you on your way.

Work exp would be advantageous but its not neccessary, myself and lots of others didnt have direct maternity or care experience and we got in first time as long as you meet the educational criteria and let your passion and committment flow you'll be well on your way

Great to have you here.

I love the name Molly, we have 2 boys so the cat got the Molly title lol
