Default Thinking of NHS career change - am I too old?

Hi everyone,
I am new. Came about this site by googling mature student and midwife.
Anyway, I already work for the NHS in microbiology as a biomedical scientist. I have done this job for 12 years now. Anyway, when I was a youngster my dream was to be a midwife but fate took a hold and I ended up going to Uni to do a Biomedical Science course. I am 36 BTW!
I have had 2 children and having them has made me realise that I wish I had gone into midwifery. I get no satisfaction from my job at the moment.
Do u think I am too old to change career now? Where do I start?

Welcome!!

Nope you arent too old, I know of women in their late forties and early fifties qualifying.

Start by having a look at what your local uni offers (under the More list at the top of the homepage) and see if you meet the criteria. Also have a look in the SM2B section on here its full of great info on how to get started.

You only get one chance at this life, so go for it

Hi Northeast Girl.

You've landed on the right planet!! I am 36 and starting in September. Follow your dream!!

If you have any questions then please feel free to ask. Why not look at the websites of the Uni's you are interested in and then look at how you might get the entry requirements as assuming you have not done any recent study or if you have will they be accepted for the midwifery degree.

hi there and welcome to the site
judging by your description i think you just about fit into the average profile of my cohort! The majority of students are 30+ with kids, as this really seems to be the time that we women decide to finally follow our dreams and do something for oursleves!
so good luck and go for it!

Hi again,
Thank you for the replies. I am going to have a look at some Uni websites now. What happens about funding and where do I find the bursary calculator?
When would I need to apply for 2009 entry?

I seriously hope not or there is no chance for me! I am 38 and will be almost 40 when I start, presuming I get a place for next year!

Welcome and good luck!
