Smile Another newbie!!!

Hey everyone!
Thought I'd introduce myself!! Ok well...i've just finished uni doing a degree in english (i was going to teach) and to be honest i've felt trapped ever since i left college 4 years ago. Wish I'd done midwifery back then! So here I am...with no real midwifery experience under my belt, but with HUGE enthusiasm!!!
Any tips/pointers, would be HUGELY appreciated, especially as i've not got much experience, and i'm REALLY worried that's going to go against me!
I'm applying for 2009 entry to;
Anglia Ruskin
City University
Middlesex Uni
Greenwich uni
Kings College.

EEEEKKKK the exceitment!!!!!!!!!!

Hi - welcome to the site - you'll love it here - everyone is so friendly, I've picked up loads of tips already!!
Midwifery is very competitive to get into so taking plenty of time to prepare can only be a good thing! Not everyone doing midwifery has any hands on experience, a lot of our ladies here were fresh from college/6th form so didn't have any previous care experience - the right attitude, passion for midwifery and determination are qualities they will be looking for! That said, if you can get some experience then that will look fab on your personal statement when you apply! You could look into helping out with classes with organisations such as La Leche League or NCT or you could see if your local maternity unit will accept volunteers (some will but some are stricter), any kind of caring looks good on your CV so you could do some work in a residential home if you wanted to...
Good luck!
xxx

Hi

I am in almost the same position as you, jendelacreme. I did a degree in Social Psychology and then spent 3 years working in research at a housing association. I wish I had chosen midwifery as my first degree, but I suppose I wasn't ready to decide when I was 18, so I just chose something that I knew I could do.

I've just got back from travelling round Australia and have decided that now is the time for me to go back to uni and do what I really want to do. I was hoping to get my application in before the 2008 deadline, but it's gone now.

I've heard that midwifery and other medical degrees are not in clearing - is this true?

Millymoo
xx

hi guys and welcome to the site both of you.
hopefully you will find a lot of advice and support to help you here in your applications.
millymoo, not all midwifery courses go into clearing, it depends on the individual uni. If you have one in mind, it's probably best to phone them to find out
just shout if you need help with anything

Yeah, that's exactly like me, i just chose English becuase I did well at A level and I got offered it, I didn't even apply to do English at uni, when i rang them with my results straight away they offered me English. Being naive and wanting to go to university desperately i just went and did it thinking 'oh well, i'll have to teach it' but for years i've been dreading teaching. It doesn't help that my parents arn't 100% suppotive about me doing midwifery, because they think i've wasted all these years etc etc...and "you're 22...you should have a propa job by now, not doing ANOTHER degree" blah blah. Does make me even MORE determined though!!!

About clearing....i assumed, if anyone did go through clearing, it would be the applicants that didn't make it first time round. That's why i'm applying 2009. I was too late for 2008 entry and all the interviews had passed, so i'm now working for a year.

Nice to know someone else who's in a position similar to mine!!
