Default Hello, newbie needing some advice please?

Hi everyone, i have been lurking for a while getting the courage to introduce myself. I am mum to 2 boys and I currently work in IT and have been wanting to change career to midwifery for a while now. I have resigned from my job ages ago and working my last week of notice.

I have signed up for the full time access course at my local college (paid for it) and i am looking forward to starting next week and everything was going swimming well untill......

Today I've found out that im pregnant. WHOOPS! I cant believe i've slipped up like this. I only really did the test as im 10 days late with very few syptoms if any. I thought it was nerves that was responsible.

Anyway my question is, if my EDD is (roughly) begining of May, does anyone know if i can start and continue the course or have i blown my chances? I have tried desperately to get hold of the college to find out but the line is constantly busy.

Anyone know? Thanks

Hi
Best to ask at the college. I would of thought that most of the college courses finish around May/June so perhaps you can hand your final works in a little early. Hope it all works out for you x

Hi jellygem. Congratulations on the pregnancy!!

It really depends on the college, but I know that on our Access course we'd pretty much covered everything by May, so you may well be able to complete the course before having the baby.

My advice would be to start the course and speak to your tutor; they're usually very understanding. Hopefully your course will be flexible enough that you could complete it a bit earlier (although you'll probably have shorter deadlines etc.) so that you still get your qualification.

Very best of luck with the course and the baby! Let us know how you get on,

Clare X

Hi Jellygem, we had finished in May, it should be possible for you to do (depending on the college) but would mean doing more assignments in a shorter time. Also depending on how many credits you would need for your uni, if you pass all your assignments, you may be able to leave the last ones as there are usually far more credits on offer than you need to pass the course, iyswim?

Hi Jellygem, Welcome to the site. Congrats on your news. I would definately start and see how you get on, as others have said most things would have been covered by May. Best of luck and let us know how you get on x

Hi i was in the same situation as u last year.
My little boy was due the begining of June and our access course finished at the end of June. I spoke to my tutors and we arranged for me to take assignments home and did a lot of independant learning. It's also good practice for uni!
I was doing extra assignments a week just so that i was a step ahead of everyone and knowing i could relax before he was born.

Hi Jellygem congratulations on your news, know how you feel found out half way through my course I was pregnant and was shocked like you but you can still do the course. Like the others have said it will mean maybe you have to be more organised to make sure that you have everything finished a bit earlier than everyone else but most access finish around the time you are due and that means you can do it.

Good luck with the baby, your access and of course telling your DH sure he will be pleased once the shock as worn off of course, take care x x x

thanks everyone for your kind comments - i feel a whole lot better about it now. my initial gut feeling was that its not over just yet, but then the panic set in. i'm still in shock and dont 'feel' pregnant.

i have told DH this evening - he's actually chuffed! im surprised, i knew he wouldnt be angry as hes not that sort of person, but pleased? i would never have guessed this reaction.

right then, Access here i come bump and all

Congratulations Jellygem!

My access course finished mid may, so you should be able to get it all done in time!
I know that one girl on our course failed her last three assignments and she was given until the september to re submit them. Surely if that can be done, then they could make an exception for you and give you some extra time on assignments if you felt you needed it.

Just go for it and see how it goes! It'll be great! A fab new start eh?!
