Responding to Alistair Darling's announcement of continued investment for the NHS, Dame Karlene Davis, General Secretary of the Royal College of Midwives, said: "I am delighted that the Chancellor recognises the value of healthcare and is continuing to invest in the NHS. However, I am disappointed that the four per-cent investment will still leave us trailing far behind many of our European neighbours. We almost caught up with them but will now fall behind again, and we need to sustain current levels of investment, not reduce them. It is also below the amount recommended by Sir Derek Wanless.
