West Midlands midwife numbers falling as birth-rate risesThe numbers of midwives leaving the NHS in the West Midlands is outstripping the numbers joining, a new survey from the Royal College of Midwives (RCM) reveals. At the same time births in the region have increased by 11.9% over the last five years, going from 60,818 in 2001 to 67,688 in 2006.*The figures from surveys of Heads of Midwifery (HoMs) and midwives form part of the evidence the RCM has submitted to the Independent Pay Review Body (PRB), which will recommend the pay award for midwives for 2008.
