Well if she hasn't been struck off yet, then the NMC must think she acted appropriately within the rules, standards and codes of conduct!! An incident like this wouldn't be dragged out otherwise. As long as you have contemporaneous record keeping and basically cover yourself in all aspects of the care you provide-even if it is limited, you state that and thats all you can do, its just the nature of the society we live in I suppose, but good care, evidence and record keeping will start to win through.
Thats half the problem with our court cases is that the records are so poor the trust don't have a leg to stand on!!!
But yes Nici, it is scary, I've had to fill in IR 1 forms on numerous occasions about incidence and near misses, staff shortages with the other midwives, but hopefully government will see sense and fund the trusts better to make sure incidents like this are avoided!!

I agree with the comments posted on here. It's the Doctor's who make the decision to go for a section and it's the whole theatre team including the hospital who should be taking the blame not just the midwife.

It must be awful to lose a baby in such circumstances but the parents need to look at the bigger picture not just go for the one person who was probably on their side.

i agree totally they make it sound like the midwife did it on purpose!why would a women put herself through so much training and studying to just throw it away like that? when we become midwifes its to help people and babies not kill them with a headline like that it sounds like she is a murderer

Such a sad story, I really do feel for the parents but like you guys I do feel sad that this poor midwife has been subjected to this witchhunt. It isn't the midwife's decision as to whether to perform a c/s and surely other staff members should be accountable if blame is to be laid somewhere. It really does make you question your choice in career when you read something like this.

Articles like that put all the blame on the midwife without looking at all the facts, as it says in the article the midwife was in and out of the room, this suggesting that she was busy, it shouldn't be the midwife getting blamed, if the goverment employed more midwifes then less unfortunate mistakes would happen as there would be enough midwifes for each woman.

I agree with the other posts that this is a very sad story indeed. I feel sad for the family that after two years they are unable to forgive and move on with their lives with their new baby. I also feel for the midwife who seems to have been singled out and blamed when there are other professionals involved in administering care and who no doubt did the very best that they could for this woman and her child. Like the other posts I agree that there is a lack of facts in the story which makes the story too one sided and black and white when we all know that there are shades of gray.

Unhappy Re: 'Midwife killed our baby'

That poor midwife. Anyone else worried about the overstreched service and those early days of qualifying? I heard that about 70 to 80% of midwives have allegations/cases brought against them in the first two years of qualifying...why are we doing this again? It does seem that there are other circumstances involved in this case though or it wouln't be going on this long.
