On first reading it sounds shocking, but I am always aware that in cases like this we only ever get to hear one side of the story. I am not condoning what happened in any way, and i really feel for the couple. I would be interestd to hear the 'other side', but that will never happen.

mmmm, interesting. So interesting, especially when you know how these things really work. Am sure the midwife was not sitting down having a cup of tea for 5 hours whilst deciding what to do!

I read it and obviously felt for the parents.

But as a student in an overstreched service, I agree with you Olly. It made me really think about how vulnerable we are as professionals. The investigation hadnt taken place at the time of the article yet strong words like 'she killed our baby' haunt me.

Hmmm. Vague with salient details isn't it?

Was she intermittentently monitored? sounds like it.

I feel for the parents, but I feel for the midwife too. Seems like the usual scapegoating, and who's to know if the C/S had been performed within 90 minutes that baby would not have suffered any neurological damage.

Bloomin' terrifying, how easily these things go wrong and how quick people are to blame.

Awful for all concerned

Very sad to read and I feel sorry for the parents concerned. It is sad that they feel the midwife was to blame. Midwives don't perform c/sections , so why aren't they blaming the surgeons and the theatre staff. It sounds like they are lashing out at the only person who tried to give them care. The whole hospital is to blame not just one individual and instead of continuing on their witch hunt why doesn;t this family try to get answers from the hospital.

Blame is so easy to allocate but admitting that standards aren't what they should have been is something that the hospital has paid to go away.

This is very sad but getting the midwife sacked will not bring back their baby or make them feel any better. Surely the effort put in to all this hate and blame would be better spent trying to get procedures in place so this doesnt ever happen again. Very sad for all concerned and Im sure the midwife concerned feels upset and guilty enough without having her whole career ruined for something that surely wasnt her whole responsibility.

The poor midwife, the article is too vague, in all the right places it seems, but I agree, it is the docs who perform and make the decision for timing of the C/S therefore it would be up to them. The heading of the article is disgusting, and this newspaper should be given a good rolloking for such a headline!! Midwives are under immense pressure as we all know, they are in and out of rooms like blue arsed flies, and this is unfair.
And not to put to fine a point on it, they said the baby had a heart condition, then it was Meconium, maybe this was due to the heart condition anyway, and the baby unable to cope in labour, thus this all probably started at home, so is mum to blame for not going to the hospital sooner!!!! Sorry but I'm just playing devils advocate here.
If the baby has Meconium aspiration syndrome then lets be honest it wouldn't really have stood a chance, regarless of timing of c/s, if ppl would have the manpower to act sooner that child would have needed a lot of medical input throughout its potentially short life, the parents would have sued for that aswell.
Sorry but they always take the money don't they????? Did they not donate it to the hospital for more midwives? or equipment? It would be nice to see the day when somebody does that instead of pointing the finger..
Sorry rant over, must get back to the dissertation!!!

Agree with you Traceyb.

I hate it when so called experts say that if x had happened then the baby would have been fine. Nobody knows what would have happened. Taking the money is an acceptance of the fact the hospital was to blame but witch hunting the midwife is something I think the media is encouraging and probably paying for too.

No amount of money can compensate for the loss of a child but getting the hospital to look at its short comings and ensuring better care is taken of other women in labour would be a more fitting tribute to my child than money!!

The midwife it seems was the only person to have given them some care and yet they want to destroy her life by getting her struck off. Who delivered their new baby - a midwife perhaps. If all midwives were sued because - procedures and staffing levels were not adequate then perhaps surgeons would be the new baby deliverers! Was going to say catchers but they just pull em out!

Stuff like that scares the crap out of me.. Makes me question whether I actually WANT to put myself in a professional where people are continuously searching for someone to blame.. Scary scary scary.
