eating nuts in pregnancy

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/7505682.stm

the trust where i am currently tells women that it is fine to eat nuts during pregnancy as long as there is no family history of nut allergy, should we be advising women about this? x

hie

I do support that, if there is no family history then i dont see why one shouldn't eat them. I have always eaten nuts with all my pregnancies, that was one of my favourate snacks, once i delivered i never liked them again.

I have been told because my husband has severe eczema and I have hay fever and sport asthma as a kid that eating peanuts when pg could result in the baby having a nut allergy or asthma. I love my peanut butter but hubby aways hides the peanut butter when I am pg just incase. But don't know how serious a study has been done on it.

This is one of those topics where it swings backwards and forwards. From what I know there was the initial knee-jerk reaction where women were told not to eat nuts at all in pregnancy, but then it came back to the 'in moderation, as long as you have no family history of atopic diseases (eczema, asthma, allergies)'. I'd stick to that at the moment and wait for them to tell us different in another 6 months, which I'm sure they will! The bit about the peanut not being a true nut is interesting though...
