Default Apgar scores?

I have to do an assignment (again lol) and my part includes skin to skin and APGAR scores at birth.

I have looked for articles, journals etc on APGAR scores and at the moment I can't find anything. Only early days yet I know, we only got the assignment today.

I was just wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction as to where I can find info on this please?

Thanks x

Have you got Mayes or Miles? they have good definitions of what APGARS are. In a nutshell they were developed by Dr Virginia APGAR in the 1950s and their purpose is assessing the condition of baby at birth at 1 min, 5 min and 10 min, scoring 0, 1 or 2.

There are 5 criteria each scoring 0, 1 or 2

  • Respiratory effort
  • Heart rate
  • Colour
  • Tone
  • Response to stimuli
The numbers are then added together to give you the 'condition'

7-10 = good condition
4-6 = depressed condition requiring some resuscitation
0-3 = severely depressed, requires immediate rescues and possibly ventilation

This will make you smile...

Sara Wickham wrote a good article in TPM about APGARS. Any midwifery book will give you good background, even the johnson and taylor skills book as to how to actually use it.
There is ton of skin to skin stuff out there, its just a question of looking. When I get my essay back on monday i will post up some useful references including the wickham one. Am guessing you can wait seeing as you got the title today?

Thanks ollybolly,

I will have another look in my practising midwife journals in case i have missed that article, and also in the skills book, I have that one, and the Myles one too.

I really appreciate the pointers.

Also try doing a search by Kangaroo care which it is also known as. Here are a few links to websites that I found by searching in NZ

http://www.coinnurses.org/resources/...care_Feb07.pdf

Also try la leche league.
