Default Is there really a lot of paperwork??

I've heard everywhere that there is an amazing amount of paperwork for the Midwifery course, is this true? And to what extent, I'm used to writing essays, but what's the biggest word count essay someone has had to do?!

Hi,

I am almost 6 months into my first year, and yes, I have been given an awful lot of paper work from lectures, clinical skills sessions etc. I am trying to get it all in some sort of order and filed away for future reference at the moment ( should have done that from the start really)

The longest essay I have had so far is 2000 words, which sounds an awful lot, well, it did to me lol, but once you get started it isn't too bad.

There is usually a dissertation to do in your final year, and from what I have read and heard, that can vary between 6000 and 10.000 words.

Hope that helps.

wow, thanks for that!! Just another quick question, do you know what a dissertation is? I've heard people talking about it but I'm still not sure what it is! Is it some sort of synopsis essay?

To be quite honest, I am not sure, but I know someone will be able to jump in and tell us both.

Blimey, yup!

I am a new second year. To date I have 6 box files full plus two cupboards and four shelves! of articles, books and journals!!

Our essays are 3000 words each we have three each semester. the fourth is 1500 words.

I think out dissertation is 5000 words and on a chosen subject, critical analysis and discussion, depending on what the chosen subject is (I think, I'll let you know next year!) I have a few ideas already (if I manage to get there!)

Hiya,

My dissertation was 8000 words, could be 10% above or below. We had to choose a topic and conduct a thorough leterature search, select the most pertinent pieces of research and fully analyse and critique them, coming up with conclusions, recommendations for practice and further research etc

Crap that sounds scary! Teesside say they don't do a dissertation... that say they do like an introduction as though you're gonna do one and then a ?Viva? ????

dont let the paperwork put you off though! Yes, there is a lot of work, and yes, you do feel like a rabbit caught in the headlights a lot of the time, BUT, most of the essays are usually on things that are really interesting, and seeing as you want to be a MW, you will have an interest and passion in and therefore find them interesting to write rather than a chore - cor, dont i sound swotty!!!!????? It might just be me, but essays whilst tiresome is where i do the vast amount of my learning. This self directed study thing is all well and good, but it is hard to find the time usually, therefore, when it comes to the essays, the research and background reading is where you do most of the learning.
Give me a dissertation anyday, rather than a viva, now they are scary!!

What are they? I was led to believe they're some kind of evidential professional discussion?

exactly - an oral exam.
subject - anything!
eg - how would you manage SROM 38+2 woman presenting on LW Mec stained Liquor, irregular contractions lasting 30 secs, decrease of fetal movements etc etc etc what would you do, give examples, guidelines etc etc

would rather sit a 3 hour exam anyday and write a 10000 dissertation that waffle in 30 min viva - they scare me!!
