Default Social Inequalities?

Just been in receipt of our first major essay!!
Basically about how and why social inequalities affect maternal and child health and looking at strategies, which have been put in place to prevent them.

I've never done any work or reading before on the subject and feel like I have had to self teach myself everything about Sociology from the beginning.

I have looked into the Black Report and CEMACH reports, and read several books on the subject of health inequalities. But wondered if anyone could point me towards anything else I should be looking at.

Our lecturers have been pretty vague about the content, although it doesn't look like they want us to concentrate on one particular inequality but to look at them all and (I'm thinking) how they might be connected.

Plus can anyone tell me the difference between a Health inequality and a social inequality, when I asked my personal tutor she turned it back on me and said "What do you think is the difference", well I wouldn't be asking if I knew, would I?

Oh and please can someone define the term psycho-social (sp?) construct by giving me an example?

Anyway any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Hola chica

Okies here goes....... I have a grade A A level in Soc and got an A for my essay but that said I never know if Im explaining sociology v well but will give your questions a go.........

a health inequality is where people have differing health status and life chances. Infant mortality rates based on social class etc. This is a good article.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/4139440.stm

a social inequality is where peoples access to housing, jobs etc isnt equal - this is a great site for stats......

http://www.statistics.gov.uk/focuson...linequalities/

Social & health inequalities is about the differences in society basically. The term psychosocial refers to someones psychological development in thier particular social environment - how they develop (or not) and how this development is affected/enhanced by the interaction in that social environment. Erikson is the big name if I remember rightly he has a theory about the stages of development in relation to social environment. In short differing lifestyles and backgrounds mean you may develop differently, hence the term psychological dysfunction, where some people have problems with stages/development. Heres a brief outline of his theory its all about trust and shame etc

Im sure Ive just confused you more but I had a go

Trust me, you couldn't have confused me more than I already was!

Thanks J ™ for the tips, explanations and links, I haven't had chance to look yet, I'm sure they will be excellent, I will peruse over them whilst on directed study tomorrow!!
