| It's so frustrating spending hours researching for articles for an assignment, you find something that seems to be just what you are looking for, and then you can't access it online grrrrr. I also find it really frustrating when you can only access stuff on the pro's of something, and very little against whatever, as we have to present both sides of the argument, it limits points you can make. I know you can state that there appears to be little eveidence available, but then what, there isn't much further you can take that. Sorry, rant over for now ![]()

| Hi, What's the assignment on? Maybe I can make suggestions if poss. Let me know. I know how frustrating it can be but depending on what the assignment is about you may have put your comments in to criticise it.

| The title is "What is the midwife's role in providing skin to skin contact after birth" I have quite a few articles for it, and found stuff in some of the text books I have, but I was trying to find something on the possible difficulties in providing it, such as cultural issues, I can't go into c sections or anything like that too much, as I have to focus on normal birth.

| I can see why it is difficult to look on the negative -maybe consider that some mum's just can't bond with their baby even if they have a nice normal delivery. I had one lady who wouldn't acknowledge her baby -not sure why but could have been because she didn't get her epidural , the anaethetist was held up in theatres and she delivered before he could come to her. I will need to sit and think on this one and do a little bit of research for you. i will get back to you on this.

| Have a word with your tutor, see if they can't offer any help. I saw mine last week regarding my 'Politics of Breastfeeding' essay/presentation, as I was having difficulty trying to suggest reasons for formula feeding in developing countries, the only thing I came up with was HIV, but then there is the debate of do they risk HIV transferal or death and disease through formula feeding with the wrong tools (ie dirty water, no money, etc). My tutor told me that despite coming around in a circle with the argument, the fact that I was trying to balance the argument was what mattered, not that it was all coming back on itself IYSWIM. No idea if that helps in any way whatsoever though... LOL Last edited by Freefall; 02-Mar-2008 at 19:30. Reason: to correct crap spelling! |

| Hi Freefall, If I can't find anything in another few days I may try and do that, the only trouble is, I am on placement at the moment, not in uni. My days off don't coincide with uni days. Also, I have a 10 day stretch coming up soon on placement, so that leaves me very little spare time. Thanks for the suggestion though, and good luck with your assignment.

| I have had a look through all my MIDIRS that I have got and back issues of the RCM mag. I can only find articles that promote and evidence base as to why it is a positive thing to do. The only negative points I can find are as you said cultural issues and the fact that some women don't like the idea of a wet, blood stained baby put straight onto their abdomens after delivery. I also considered about women who have depression and what about women who are negative about having a baby? I am going to send an email out to my qualified midwife friends and see if they have any suggestions - will let you know of any helpful feedback. A 10 day stretch on placement - poor you! You will be wiped out! Make sure you get plenty of rest!
