i just wanted to know when and how often essays/assignments are given in the first year and also how long you are given to complete it

This prob varies from uni to uni. Our year is split into two semester's each one has three modules in first year we had two interprofessional ones and midwifery specific. Near the start of each module we get set the assignment, this is detailed in the module handbook (eg started modules two weeks ago, hand-in dates end of July) we have three essays from the modules and one extra for midwfery which is connected to practice learning, so eight per year, four each semester.

how long does a semester last

Bear in mind we are feb starters so it is ten weeks with ten weeks practice placement, alternating every five weeks, so five weeks uni, then five weeks placement, etc. So 20 weeks altogether. Then off for the summer then start all over again!

In my first year..

Started September.. All assignment briefs given at the beginning of the year..
First assignment due early December..
Exam early May..
An assignment and a poster presentation due middle of June..

As well as a piece of reflective writing for each 5 week placement (so 5 throughout the year)

Always had PBL stuff to do and our portfolio to keep updated as well...

Also any random presentations/posters that they threw at us throughout the year!

oh ok, so for the exam is it only 1 paper, and how do you prepare yourself for the exams and assignments

hiya

i started on 25th jan, they split it into 3 simesters each one 15 weeks. we were given 2 assignments in the first week and they have to be in the 1st week of may, so we have had a while, but we couldnt start them as we had not done the theory.

then its off for 2 weeks and 1 reading week, i think the next one is an exam and a reflection not sure about the 3rd simester though.

i was wondering what kind of support lectures give to help students with essays when they are on placement

We have email access to them, but it is hard sometimes. We can't do full drafts any more now, so feedback isn't really a concern now. It is tough getting replies though.

Never had any, only for my dissertation at their insistence, I think a few probably visited the lecturers quite a lot, but I just got on with it, asked friends midwives in practice their thoughts etc..
