My sister couldnt have any medical kind of pain relief with her 2nd and 3rd because she had had a huge reaction to pethadine with her first and also reactions to analstesia in other operations....so basically she could only use tens, massage etc because she was allergic to all the medical stuff.

I have asked her, sent her an email and a text, she text me back yesterday saying she'd read the email last night but still no reply. She's a bit of a funny onion so might not get back to me for a while, hope it won't be too late!

We're not exactly close, I only found out she used hypnobirthing recently and her daughter is 1 now! The only thing I can think is that, as a nurse, she's aware of all the nasty side effects of drugs and so searched for an alternative, or perhaps someone else she knows recommended it. Not much help am I?

I would say it would be good to include that too, but like you I may be way off the mark.

The attitude of the midwife offering analgesia definitely has a huge impact..... what is available and what is offered.

NICE now recommend that TENS should not be offered. The birth partners also have a huge role in influencing what analgesia the women choose. Without the midwife's support I find that a lot of partners want the women to have epidoodals. And if the mum is present, they usually like to put their two-penneth worth of their analgesia or lack of the same.
