Hiya, i've just done an essay on health promotion and it took into account things like others have mentioned, if you live in a deprived area, lack of a job, psychosocial support etc. I put all that in and said that birth is now seem more hollistically as well as medically! Hope you get on ok with it x

heya, we did some work on health and defining it in our foundations of midwifery practice classes. we thought that health encorporates psychological, sociological and physiological health. different individuals see different aspects of health more important to them than others. so really 'health' is very subjective, more of a 'term' used broadly as different people view it in different ways. so some people may view health as purely medically but others might see their families getting on well as being most important in health. or another person may see the fact that they feel good about themselves as them being 'healthy' at that point in time when medically they might not be deemed healthy at all!

in my eyes obstetricians and the medical model define the norms of health, but as midwives we can take a more personal and holistic approach by asking women how they feel. instead of BMI measuring, we could ask them how do you feel about your weight, if they're happy with it, then maybe that is healthy. but not to the obstetricians....lol

we also looked at i think maslow's hierachy of needs which was something to do with health as well...

hope this helps, kimmie xx
