Default How would you approach this essay?

I have to re-do the concepts in health essay that I failed, and I really don't know how to approach it now.

The title of it is 'Health is more than just the abscence of disease'. I want to stick to discussing just one or two topics in it, as I tried to include too much last time and made a complete mess of it.

Can anyone give me any ideas please?

Hmm I read it and immediately thought about things like:

being a good weight/good BMI
good diet
lack of smoking
not consuming loads of alcohol
regular exercise.

... just because you're not ill does not mean you're healthy? I've probably taken the complete wrong angle... I have typed down exactly what sprung to mind as soon as I saw the title. Not sure what you're doing in lectures etc

I'm not sure what angle you're writing about?

is it like Noo says lifestyle choices?

not sure which way you are looking at this

do you mean looking at the person holistically ie your psychological, physical, emotional wellbeing

Sorry, reading it back I was a bit vague. This is what we got told about it.

3. Discuss the statement ‘health should be considered as more than just an absence of disease’

If you have chosen to write on this subject you should start by pointing out that historically health has been treated as only the absence of disease and nothing more. The interactive package on health inequalities in blackboard demonstrates throughout that health is more than ‘the absence of disease’ in particular social factors affect health status. To see health as the absence of disease is to see health in negative terms (work towards avoiding disease rather than keeping healthy). In contrast to work towards keeping healthy is to see health in positive terms. The World Health Organisation emphasises the need for positive health and dealing with those factors that determine health.

When writing this essay you could demonstrate how and why the social factors like employment determine health (the determinants of health, see the interactive package on blackboard). If you write in this way about the determinants of health you will be writing about social class. You could also write about the way social factors associated with gender or ethnicity influence health status. For example women are more likely than men to be poor and poverty has an effect on health. However, it is equally appropriate to write only about the determinants of health and their influence on health through social class. For example, people in social class V are more likely to live in poor housing and be unemployed or have a low paid routine job.

Riiiiiiiiiiiigggggggghhhhttttttt.....

So which aspect interests you?

What did you do last time?

Social class is an interesting one, shortened life expectancy, increased morbidity, increased risk of pregancy complications, miscarriage, stillbirth etc

Missy?

Well, last time I tried to include everything I could think of, social class, health, work, ethincity etc etc lol, and got totally lost, plus I did the whole darn thing using direct quotes as I misunderstood what we had to do totally.

I am interested in the social class aspect and that is what I tried to do, but made a total mess of it, so I want to get it right this time. But have no idea where to start now?

I would concentrate solely on social class and its effect on health, to make it easier....?

Yes it would be easier that's true, what kind of things would you include/concentrate on?

The OU book Understanding Health Linda Finlay, Clive pearson and Susan ram covers this subject, it has chapters on - What is health, thinking about health, healthy individuals, healthy families, healthy localities and healthy societies, they mainly concentrate on stress, smoking and heart disease.
If you can get hold of it, it may help you.
