You could say ...this quote taken from blah blah reinforces the notion that we experience pain in a completely individual fashion ???

Or ...this quote is often the viewpoint of many people ???

Or you could just leave the quote as a statement in itself ??

I could be completely wrong so use your own judgement.

It depends if you want to use the quote directly or reword it ??

i think in the past people just bung quotes in pan out their essays.

why is the quote important? what are you trying to get over by say it?

it the essay on the topic of pain or are you just mentioning pain in passing?

if you make a quote it depends how you enmesh it into the flow of the essay...

eg you could say
Smith (2004) defines pain as 'a complex, personal, subjective, multifactorial phenomenon, which is influenced by psychological, physiological and sociocultural factors'. smiths book of pain 2004 page 700

if its a direct quote you need to put page numbers and should be indented or in a paragraph on its own... check your uni guidelines fro this.

or you could say
Pain is described by smith (2004) as a individual experience that is exacerbated by emotional factors including stress and anxiety.

which ever you do you need to go on to discuss it in more detail eg or find counter arguments or things you can do to help.

however hayward states as far back as 1974 that a good explanation prior to treatment or intervention improves recovery, which is the view of macaffery and passero who advocate for good education not only to lessen pain but also to lessen anxiety.

you basically need to expand on the sentence you have written regardless of whether you use a direct quote or rephrase what the original author has said.

hope that makes sense

I would say by the very use of the word 'discuss' you will have to analyse the quote.

Having just finished a hard 3000 word essay myself, my brain is too mushy to help you right now - but we are not allowed to use direct quotes.

we can use direct quotes as long as it is a brief quote, such as the one of yours, its simplistic but more complex to break it into to pieces and explain, see if you can use a brief one only, then back it up with what others say/compare it to others thoughts etc..
