Ok cool. Well everywhere is different but we - in this first year have had 5 models. IP (interprofessional working) for which we had to write 3 essays. Human Biology - 1 essay (in 3 parts) and an exam. FPSS (foundation in psychology and social science) - 1 essay and an exam. Gynae - reflective presentation and competencies. Low risk - Case study presentation, 1 eassy, an exam and competencies - this module is worth 40 level 1 credits whereas the rest are all worth 20....

Each essay I would say you get the title a good couple of months in advance.

Also have to do a numeracy exam and clinical skills tests etc...

Is that what you were after??? If not - please say so - I'm a bit slow on the uptake sometimes!

how very studious!!
I think it's quite hard to get uni specific practice in unless you know what modules you will be doing and what topics you will be covering. As a rule most of us seem to do some kind of reflective assingment, but thats quite general i guess?!
instead, i think it is probably more valuable for you to keep abreast of current issues, do some general background reading on low risk labour, look at the NMC and RCM websites, the latest CEMACH report, that kind of thing.
hth?

I know at uni we'll be doing a lot of "trigger" assignments in groups. This I'm a little wary of as I've no experience of PBL at all. I'm more of the "talked at" to teach learner. I think I'm going to struggle with these.

PBL was very weird at first - it feels forced, and more than once we wondered whether it wouldn't be easier to just teach us... but now I realise that it's about preparing you for practice, as the environment of midwifery is quite problem-based.

I think all you can do is go for it, and try your best - you never know - you might find you like it!

Practice Based Learning at a guess - we have EBL - with the E standing for Enquiry...

PBL stands for Problem Based Learning. We are given a trigger....a kind of scenario, and we have to work out between our group what things are relevant to the given title.

For example, Mrs A is 14 weeks pregnant, and coming to see the midwife for the first time. What is the midwife's role in providing ante natal care for Mrs X.

When we have narrowed it down as far as we can, we each have to take a topic, research it, and do a presentation to our group. Sometimes we also have to do an asignment from it too.

Hope that makes some kind of sense? This explains it better than I can. Problem Based Learning or PBL
