Hi, I know the bursary is a boggling issue, and everyone's bursary and loan amounts are different and means tested. However, was wondering....

My partner earns a fairly decent wage and i am an MCA, we have a mortgage and no children. Obviously when i am at uni i will have no income. Because I have a mortgage and my partner earns a decent wage does this mean I will get a lower bursary as i am deemed to 'have money' as this is seriously not the case, as without my wages the bills cannot be covered. Or do they give slightly more if you can prove your bill outlay for the month is quite a hefty amount? Bit worried that's all....

Hi Kimmie,

Try this link, it is to the NHS bursary website, they have a calculator on that page which might give you an idea how much you may get.

http://www.nhsstudentgrants.co.uk/

Hope it helps,

Pauline

Hello. There are "allowable expenses" which they take into account. if you have no children I believe the expenses they will take into account for you will be mortgage/pension/life insurance. Other bills such as credi cards, loan repayments etc are not taken into account even if they affect your income greatly. However, I believe you can apply for the uni's hardship grant if you believe you need it, they will fine tooth comb your finances to see if you need it.

You can also apply for the reduced student loan of around £2200 per annum which is paid in 3 installments.

Hi, I was asking a similar question only i have 2 kids to pay for too.

I tried the bursary calculator on my uni's website but that came out at a very small amount, no where near enough for me to cover my bills.
But i then tried the calculator on the NHS website which gave me a more realistic amount that i could probably manage on fairly well.

Just hoping the NHS calculator is right. I intend to check this at the Uni' open day next month.

The NHS calculator is for diploma courses where you receive a bursary. I think my uni said about only being able to get a means tested bursary, but i guess that is means tested. Well, i guess we shall just wait and see!!!

Where it asks what you are studying, you have to change it from diploma to 'other' (I think it is) then it will calculate it on the degree for you.
