Default Confused!!

Ok, so i was just reading through some of the older posts and I think I've got mixed up!!
Im 19 so applying as an undergrad and gonna live away from home, hopefully as far from London as poss!!!
From reading perspectus' and the info. booklet from the NHS I gathered that there are no tuition fees for Midwifery, period. And that almost everyone gets a non-means tested bursary of bout £5,500. Have i misread/interpreted this info or is it different if you are a mature student??
Please Help!!

Hi Jem,

There are no tuition fees to pay for midwifery, the NHS pays those. That's the good news lol. The bad news (or not depending on how you see it) is that the basic bursary is £4.365 (Or thereabouts) per year, this is £365 per month. That is means tested though, so different people receive different amounts. You can then apply for a student loan, which is around £2.200 a year paid in 3 instalments (sorry can't remember the exact figure).

Hope that is some help?

You will be assessed on your parents income (I ASSUME). It will depend on how much they earn as to how much you will receive. it can range anything from up to £4,300 per year plus student loan to ZERO bursary plus loan.

Hiya!

had a look at the link, I am also a bit confused about the money situation! That link sort of confused me a little more hehe, as it seemed to be that if you're not income assessed, you get more anyway than if you are assessed? Or am I reading it wrong?

It does frustrate me that some things are based on parental income because I aswell pay for everything myself, including living costs for the house. Just because your family may earn more, does not mean you actually receive that money!! AArghhhh haha

Here Here Emma, I pay my parents rent too, I'm not complaining coz it means i understand the value of the money i earn and how 2 budget, but if bursary's are dependant on what my parents earn, they should take into consideration how much actually reaches me!!
I think Im gonna give the uni and NHS a call tommorrow tog et it cleared up instead of jus wondering!
the table sayd i would get £6,037, coz its midwifery and im gonna live away from home although im from London. but the wise women who are already on courses here say that income does matter!!
hows ur prep 4 interview goin?

Hi Jem,

The box you were looking at is for the diploma, not the degree. Very few (if any) uni's now offer the diploma, most are only doing the degree now.

If you scroll down that page a little bit, it gives the figures for the income-assessed (degree.) As you will see the figures are totally different, and quite a bit less, even after adding the student loan on to it.

Hope this helps make it a bit clearer, it is very confusing, it took me a while to work it all out.

I agree, it does suck lol, and it is far from being clear on the pages, I think you need a degree just to understand that before you even start the course

You are very welcome. xxx
