Default Moving area & benefits

Hi everyone, I am going to have to move up to Shropshire and wanted to know if the local council will transfer me up to there?
Also, do single parents still qualify for housing benefit with the bursary etc? Who knows what i'd be entitled to with two children and myself?
Any help would be greatly appreciated xx

Hi PP
Don't know anything about council transfers...sorry. But do know about housing benefit!
My local council does award housing benefit to single parents with the NHS bursary and childcare element as well. On the face of it, it looks as though you are not entitled to it, but dig a little deeper and the small print says if you are single and have dependants that you will qualify.
Good luck with the move

Hi,

You need to contact the council where you want to move to, ask them if they will consider moving you into their area. There is a scheme where you can move from one area to another, but it usually has to be for things like caring for a sick/elderly relative, extra support for yourself and family that kind of thing.

But, it is 3 years since I last worked for a registered social landlord, so the rules may have changed since then.

I wasn't aware you could move areas without either exchanging or getting back on a list for reasons such as homelessness or escaping an abusive spouse. You may have to privately rent as going to uni isn't really a sufficient reason for wanting a house from the council in another area.

It was possible but as I said in my last post, it has to be for specific reasons. Not just because you want to move to another area. But, it may well have changed and not be an option anymore. No harm in looking into it though I would have thought.

Thanks for all your replies. The reason isn't just for Uni, I have lots of family up there who will be able to give me the support that I will need for Uni which is the primary reason. I think I will go and see the council to see what they say. I mean surely not allowi ng you to move would be against human rights - the freedom to live where we want to etc...I will have to go and see. If I privately rented in the area, I could still apply for Housing Benefit that way though couldn't I? xxx

absolutely. You qualify for housing benefit whether it be for social housing or rentring from a private landlord. So even if you cant transfer you could still privately rent, although I guess you might not want to give up your house?

No i'd be happy to give up my house as I won't need it and it could go to someone who does. That is the way I will have to do it then if I can't get on the housing list. Thanks xxx

It is entirely possible to transfer council house tenancies to different areas. My Mum's neighbour transferred to Wales last year through the council, her family are from there though, so I don't know if that makes a difference?

As far as finances go, you should get enough to live on reasonable well. Being a single mum too you should recieve tax credits, child benefit, housing benefit, council tax benefit, a decent bursary and a student loan. The housing benefit should pay most of your rent, possibly all if it is council housing.

However, this is my area, but I am hoping it would be the same, though tbh it is nigh impossible to find out exactly what income you will be getting until you start the course. We found out what bursary we would recieve right at the start.

I would also contact their district council and some of their lettings/estate agents too, to see what you would be paying and whether transfers are applicable.

Hope that helps, I may be posting rubbish, as I haven't bothered reading everyone else's posts

Thanks smwife. I went to my council the other day and they said I just had to ring the council where I am wanting to go to discuss going on there list but that I would have to give up my house here if I moved which I gathered any way. Some people have said they are getting housing benefit whereas others are saying your not...I will apply and see! From what I gather, finance issues get sorted once you begin so its best not to fret, i'd just rather go in knowing but it has to be do-able, so many others do it. xxx
