| Hiya My names Catriona, I've been debating Midwifery for years and planning on it once my youngest starts school. Now I work as an NA in the community (spent prev years on rehab, elderly care). I know that as a few freinds have left the wards to do their nurse training on Secondment through the Trust. Does anyone know if I would be able to do secondment Midwifery training on the same principle as others do to qualify for General Nursing training? Thanking you lots and will make you a lubbly coffee! |

| Put the kettle on then! Hello and welcome to the site. Secondment is used for midwifery, however it depends on the finances available at your trust. To find out if this is poss, I would ask your supervisor directly. My friend was going to be seconded (she was an MCA) but the funding in the end was withdrawn, so she was gutted, she is carrying on, but on a meagre bursary instead. I hope you are able to be seconded, I wish you luck

| Hello there, not sure if you can, as the secondment is for the diploma isn't it? Perhaps I'm wrong, but I thought it was, but I've not met any on the course as yet, but perhaps you could do it via the nursing-midwifery route, so that you get paid throughout the whole of your training, so in that way it has big advantages dependant on your other finances, but I know if I could have had a wage on-top I would have had a loss less stress-all due to finances. But good luck it would be great if you could do that.

| secondments used to be for the 18month course, so RGN first and then MW. And then secondments were given to MCA's to do 3 year Bsc degree, not the diploma, but all funding now been withdrawn, which is very sad imo. Welcome to the site, i hope you have some luck and your local trust might be able to find some money for you x

| our local trust has just reintroduced secondments! So MCA's can train to be MW on the 3 year degree programme. Can't believe it! Think they have scrimped and saved and cut down on so much recently that they have magically found some money to employ 6 new MCA's, to second present MCA's, to up all recent graduates hours to full time, and i see that they are now also recuriting for one or two more MW's. Me thinks we are coming to the end of the financial year PDQ and money NEEDS to be spent so as to ensure correct funding next year....screwy!! x

| You guys are brilliant. Thats just what I was looking for. I have to ask, on acount of being a muppet, what does MCA stand for? Is is Midwife Care Assistant? I had a brief chat with my Line superviser who felt that HCA's may not get seconded over to Midwifery being a different discipline to that than Nursing which is the area in which I currently work. But in all honesty I dont get the feeling she would like to lose any more of her HCA's to nursing or OT so was pretty off hand about it and seriously doubt she would be particuarly helpful. Luckily the rest of my team is excellent. I did debate getting a job on the Midwifery ward here to get a better idea but at present I'm a B grade NA and would have to drop in my million pound a week wages (hey you know I'm telling porkies dont you!). So I think I'll get my NVQ3 finished and stalk our training dept bird once my youngest starts pre school. Wannabeemidwife type bird- I'd be ever so grateful if you let me know how you get on, thanks. |

| Ahhh, I don't think I read you OP properly... Yes MCA stands for maternity care assistant, and you are far less likely to be seconded as an HCA. The best way to get seconded would be to more over to maternity and work there for a few months. HCA's can and do get seconded but more emphasis is placed on MCA's. I think your plan is excellent, good luck with it. Keep us posted, it was good to hear what happened next!
